Entire computer freezes except for occasional blinking hard drive light?
I have an Asus N81Vg-X1 laptop, with a 2.4 GHz core 2 duo, 4 gb DDR2 RAM, nVidia GT 120M GPU, and a 320gb 7200 rpm HDD. I run Windows 7 professional 64-bit. Almost 2 years old now, pretty flawless for the most part, very pleased with the laptop. Recently though, I've had an issue that is occurring with increasing frequency where my entire computer will lock up, mouse stops moving and all, can't turn caps lock on, etc. The hard drive light, however, will blink sort of rhythmically occasionally. It remains frozen as such until I do a hard restart.
I have Firefox 4, and there may be a correlation between Firefox and the crashes. Sometimes, it will be switching tabs or something, and it kind of seems like it will hesitate, my mouse will kind of jump, then totally freeze. I've been using SpeedFan to check for any overheating, and there's nothing really obvious there. This is a very strange problem to me, and quite annoying. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
I've been considering doing a reformat, but it's a bad time for me to do so now. Will likely do it in a few weeks. I've run multiple virus and malware scans in and out of safe mode, and am fairly certain this is not caused by a virus or malware.

Corrupted System Files
Your computer freezes due to corrupted system files. System files corruption is one of the most responsible causes for crashing the entire computer. Deleting or moving the system files may crash your computer.
1. Insert the Microsoft Windows Installation CD ROM.
2. Click Start | Run.
3. Type SFC/ ScanNow and press ENTER.
4. Follow the instructions on your screen.
Corrupted Registry
System registry corruption leads to runtime errors and your computer crashes. Windows Registry is very complex and not easy to repair manually. Hence, a third-party Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer software is recommended.
1. Download a Registry Cleaner and PC Optimizer software such as Reginout.
2. Click Registry Cleaner tab.
3. Click Start Scan.
4. The registry scan will start. Wait till it is finished.
5. As per the results, click Fix Now button to start repairing you registry.
Often good registry cleaners include built-in Backup & Restore centre that lets you recover from an unforeseen situation by simply restoring the state of your registry.
Faulty RAM
Your computer freezes due to problems with the computer memory. A faulty RAM may result in Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).
In such a case, remove the existing RAM and clean it using a soft cloth. Then, connect it again. The problem may not persist..
Incomplete Installations
Your computer freezes because of a previously failed or incomplete installation. An incomplete or failed installation creates junk registry entries and thereby system crashing problem.
Repair the registry entries created by a failed setup and delete the files that still remain on your hard disk. Delete the contents of C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Disk Space Allocated by Unnecessary Files
Your computer freezes if the operating system has no adequate free disk space to perform its operations. Temporary files, temporary internet files, log files, browser cache and other files may occupy a large amount of your disk space and thus generating runtime errors that crashes your system.
Using Disk Cleaner, delete the junk files from your hard disk. The steps are as below:
1. Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk CleanUp.
2. Follow the instructions on your screen.

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK
Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:
Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.
Then begin by;
delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.
goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions
goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.
Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.
Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.
Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.
Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.
Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:
dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories
Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

Probly got a virus...
Back up your personal files on an external hard drive or flash drive and clear the drive manually in windows
This will make your system reboot.
Be sure to have your windows disk handy cuz you'll need to reinstall it.
