What is an air-conditioner which uses Ammonia?

Ammonia has a low boiling point and high latent heat value but the high discharge pressures require water cooled condensers and compressors. Because of this it cannot be used for window or split unit air conditioners. And since the gas has a pungent irritating smell the conditioned air cannot be allowed to flow over the Ammonia coils. Hence water is first chilled by Ammonia coils and circulated in coils placed in the Air Handling Units. The air from the conditioned space is continuously moved over these chilled water coils after passing through filters. Hence air conditioning systems above 5TR capacity can be found using Ammonia as Refrigerant.

Ammonia readily changes from a liquid to a gas, but it is not currently being used in cooling products

Ammonia was being used in airconditioners, refrigerators etc as coolent. but now very efficient and eco-friendly hydrocarbons are available to replace ammonia.
