Minecraft Alpha is the version of Minecraft that was available for purchase before December 2010. it has since gone beta

Minecraft was in the Alpha development stage until December 20, 2010, when it moved into the Beta stage of development.
Anyone playing the most current version today would be running Beta. Nothing is wrong. The screenshots you are seeing are likely images from last year.

do not worry, its the exact same
alpha came before beta, its the same thing
after notch (creator of minecraft) updated enough, he updated alpha to beta
after more updates, notch will remove the beta word and will just say minecraft at the top

Depends what you were supposed to buy?!
