is it possible to have diabetes...?

and not have it show up on your a1c test yet? I have all the main symptoms of being diabetic, yet my doctor says my blood test (glucose and a1c) are clear. Could I be developing diabetes without it showing up yet on the tests?

What tests should I ask my doctor to do as a follow-up? I was told a fasting test might be important to have. Should I request an appointment with an endochrinologist or should I continue to see my family doctor about this?

Thanks for any insight anyone can give me.

I wish I could say "no, if your doctor tells you you're not diabetic, then you aren't," but general practitioners are sometimes unaware of the new research and not particularly knowledgeable about diabetes. My mother's GP ignored her pre-diabetic fasting blood sugar for years.

Standards can vary from physician to physician, from laboratory to laboratory, so I suggest you request a copy of your lab work and look over the results. Get a referral to an endocrinologist who can help you interpret your readings.

I have known diabetics with high-normal A1cs and even normal fasting blood sugar. Although this is extremely uncommon, sometimes high blood sugar is mainly noticeable after meals. If blood sugar drops fairly quickly after a meal, despite being in diabetic range briefly, the A1c may not reflect that. I really love the A1c and it's a useful tool among others in diagnosing and managing diabetes, but it's not 100% foolproof and some people do slip between the cracks. I can't say whether that's you, but it may be a good reason to see a specialist, especially if your lab work indicates that you may be more borderline than your GP knows or understands.

No, the symptoms of diabetes are those of high or low blood sugar and thus would show up on a blood test. STOP BEING A HYPOCHONDRIAC AND GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE!!! You don't want diabetes anyways, so stop worrying about it.

A1C over six is NOT diabetes. It has to be over 7. Your symptoms are most likely something else. Many minor issues share similar symptoms of diabetes. 10% of the population is diabetic, 10% of the diabetic population is type 1, it is VERY unlikely many of the people on here thinking they have diabetes has it.

AND insulin resistance isn't the only way to get diabetes. Type 1 is when you are born with antibodies and for some reason (maybe sickness, allergy, doctors aren't sure) they attack your insulin producing cells until you produce no more, and thus you get diabetes type 1.

Type 2 has pre diabetes. and type 2 is insulin resistance.

The doctor said "tests are clear" but did he tell you wnat the numbers were? You need to go get a copy of those blood tests and then go to http://www.labtestsonline.org/understanding/index.... and read what each line means.

A1c absolute perfect is 5 and no chance of having diabetes. Over 6 is definitely diabetes!!

A1c does not depend on fasting!!! It is a measurement of the number of red blood cells with glucose moleccules clinging to them and eating or drinking anything any time will not change that!

The fasting comes with the horrid OGTT when they want you to be starving for breakfast and do a blood pricking then have you drink their syrup and an hour later do mmore blood pricking. It is guaranteed to make any borderline or pre-diabetic fully diabetic and those with sensitive stomachs toss their cookies!! I have never liked syrupy foods and when I was pregnant there were definite things I could not taste or smell, and it wasn't for just the first few weeks either, it was the entire 10 months!

Life style is often part of the issue. Life style changes now could delay or prevent you from getting diabetes later. Learn here https://tr.im/qmAPs

What you eat is not actually the cause of diabetes, but how you live can be. If you sit on the couch all day, your chances of developing diabetes goes up greatly.

Just do the best you can to not gain weight and to maintain an active life style and that will greatly help reduce some of your risks.

If your fasting blood glucose and A1C were given the all clear, then you don't really have a lot to worry about.

The only way in which you could develop diabetes without it showing up on your tests is the following:

    - if you suffer from severe insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia

    - this means that your cells don't respond to insulin, so your pancreas has to work extra hard to pump out industrial amounts of insulin

    - over time, there is a chance that your pancreas poops out

    - this set of circumstances would leave you with normal glucose and A1C results, because the pancreas is putting in turbo-charged action to keep your blood glucose at normal levels

If your pancreas poops out, that's when you become diabetic.

It is possible to have severe insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia but not become diabetic, as in some people, their pancreas just keeps on going and going and going like the Duracell bunny. (This, for example, is what happens with the vast majority of fat people in the world, who are NOT diabetic.)

Feel free to message me if you need more information about this.

When I was diagnosed I went to urgent care and they gave me a regular blood sugar test (without fasting.) That's when I found out my blood sugar was a little over 800! They sent me straight to the Hospital and told me I could've died if I waited one more day to get it checked out. (I just thought I had the flu...) Def. get it checked out before it gets that bad!!

The fasting test would be a HUGE help and it would definitely tell you if you're diabetic. If it says that your blood sugar is over 140ish then you'll be diagnosed.

A family doctor should be able to do it, but I'd ask first...

    Good luck!
