Maybe it's because assholes keep riding in the passing lane instead of going back to the right (or in your case the left) lane. You know what? You should report them, but only if you never, ever do anything wrong behind the wheel again yourself.

Certainly if you think that the police are breaking the law, you should do what you can to report them preferably by mail to the Commander at the local police station. Don't ring up and complain, it has to be in writing.

However, you mentioned that you have seen them on the phone while driving. Australian Road Rule 300 - Use of Mobile Phones, indicates that: "The driver of a vehicle (except an emergency or police vehicle) must not use a mobile phone while the vehicle is moving, or stationary but not parked...." This indicates that police are allowed to use a mobile phone while driving.

There are many laws that exempt police during the course of their duties - this includes the obvious ones like speeding, and running red lights when responding to an emergency. As an earlier answerer pointed out, if you feel you are being tailgated, then ensure you are in the far left lane - and if you are doing everything right, you should just pull over and let them pass safely.

Keep reporting it. And keep track of your reports. And if nothing happens, then turn your records over to the county prosecutor or the state's Attorney General. Of course it's dangerous, and if they're doing it just in the hope you'll do something to merit a ticket, it's also corrupt. The state Highway Patrol then has jurisdiction.

    Because they're cops...

Source(s): I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander. During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union. I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration..
