Vomiting issue with my son. does he have a sensitive gag reflex?
Ok, my son is almost 18 months, and ever since he was 7 months old he throws up when he cries for a certain period of time and if he coughs too hard. He still doesn't sleep through the night because if I try to let him cry it out, he becomes hysterical and throws up all over. And when he's sick, he throws up constantly (from the coughing and probably from feeling the mucus at the back of his throat), we have to keep a bucket ready after every meal he eats! Also, if anything even touches his throat, like the collar of his shirt while getting dressed, he gags.
Can anyone offer some insight to this? Is it a sensitive gag reflex? Is there anything that can be done about it, therapy, medication, etc?
Thanks!
He has been to the doctors a number of times, they always treat him for the cold and ignore me when I say he throws up after crying. He has been to three doctors and the ER, and they always focus on the current "problem" of a simple cold instead of what the real issue is.
And he is definitely not lacking in nutrition or fluids, he is 18 months and wears 3t clothing and has plenty of wet diapers a day! Obviously, if I feared he was dehydrated I would take him to the ER again, but that isn't the issue. He is perfectly fine, and incredibly active...but if he cries for too long he vomits. And also when he has a cold.

JAM, acid reflux is a very serious concern and possibility here with your son. There is a possibility that he could have GERD and need to see a pediatric doctor who specializes in GI issues. The best thing for you to do at this point is write down a log/journal of exactly what his symptoms are and for how long, when he cries/vomits, when he coughs/vomits, and especially the fact that at 18 months he still does not sleep through the night. Having excessive mucus and saliva is also a symptom of having acid reflux or GERD, so your son definitely sounds like he would benefit from seeing a specialist and getting on an anti-reflux med like zantac or prevacid.... anything to take away his pain and help him feel better!!! I am surprised that hes pediatrician hasn't considered this as a possibility before now. I'm not 100% sure, but I think that there's a simple xray test that can be done as a preliminary type of diagnosis for this sort of thing. Usually there is an immediate and dramatic change in young ones with reflux issues once they start taking the right medication. You will feel better, he will *definitely* feel better, and your whole family will be happier overall as a result. Best wishes with this... gather up all the information you can on acid reflux in toddlers, log ALL of his symptoms including those you've stated here, and take him to his pediatrician and tell them you want to be referred to a specialist pronto!

I know this post is from a long time ago but our son has the same condition. We've had every medical test done out there. He's been put under for an endoscopy, had a full evaluation by an ENT, did a swallow study, etc. They can't find any physical reason why he gags so frequently and why he vomits so much. He's been on reflux medicine and it didn't help at all. He, too, is a big kid for his age and very healthy so the doctors aren't worried about his growth. He has been evaluated for developmental delays and the evaluators concluded that he is actually ahead on all his other developmental milestones. So we are baffled. He's 2 years old and he still gags and pukes regularly. He can barely chew a piece of meat without gagging. We have no answers. We're starting feeding therapy this week. The doctors have told us that some kids just have this condition and eventually outgrow it.

let me guess, u burp more often and so u're always feeling nauseous bc of the gag reflex? that's ur heartburn, which doesn't always feel like regular heartburn, it can also make u burp a LOT. take Rolaids to the burps, they'll help a LOT, and chew on mints for the gag reflex. after u're done w/ ur 1st trimester, this should go away. i had the same problem

Take your son to the doctor. What if it's not gag reflex and something else. Have your son checked, and make sure he is drinking up on fluids, because as your child vomits he loses fluids and nutrients as well. Take him to the doctor right now!
