If you needed a life-saving medication that was only available in a pork-derived capsule, and no other form...?

...would taking that life-saving medication be haram or halal?

If it is a life or death situation, I believe it is halal to consume something that is "pork-derived" provided that you make dua over it and ask for Allah's mercy and understanding--otherwise, refusing to take it when you know you will die if you don't amounts to suicide, which is totally haraam. Besides, it's not like you're sitting down for a ham dinner. Please, don't make Islam harder than it has to be, and Allah knows best.

There is no medication on earth that is ONLY available in a pork derivative capsule. Vegetarian capsules can hold any medication the exact same way as pork gelatin based capsules.

If we are starving to death and the only thing to sustain our life is pork we are permitted to eat it, so take a wild guess.

This one is a no brainer, life is the most precious thing in Islamic teachings and any medication is halal even the one derived from pork.

read the verses Nur up there gave.. I'll copy and paste

    [16:115]

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

where it says: but whoever is forced by necessity....

right there.. Allah allows us to eat pork or items that are forbidden for a purpose.. Allah is merciful. Islam is merciful.. it isnt meant as a hardship..

If we have no other food and are starving and the only item to eat is pork meat, we are allowed to do so to preserve our lives.. up till the point just satiated and when another food source becomes available to us.. same as in medicine.. we also dont take alcohol, but if a medicant has alcohol in it, and it is the only one to save our lives.. we are allowed to take it..

As a life-saving medication, it is allowed in Islam.

If something with pork is your only chance for survival..then yes you can take it.

Something haram is the only choice, then it becomes halal

    Allah knows best

If it's life saving it doesn't matter - or to put it another way, they'll eat pork when it suits them !

    Look carefully at these ayats:

    Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim

    [2:173]

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

    [5:3]

Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

    [6:145}

Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

    [16:115]

He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah . But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

    - - - -

Notice how despite all those ayat saying it is haram, if you are forced out of necessity with the intention that you're not doing it to be like "oh this is so tasty or w/e" then you can have the medication.

But I highly doubt this medication wiill ever exist, lol.

yes it is allowed in Islam as life is more sacred, Our intentions are given more priority on our actions. Allah swt. knows what is hidden in our hearts, so intention takes lead.

Source(s): Not for medication but for food if someone is dying with hunger and no food available other than swine flesh.
