Cerebral Palsy-my 4 year old has it?

Hello,

My four year old son Shaun has ataxic cerebal palsy (this means he walks with a very wide base of gait) and also has very very tight musculature of his lower limb, particularly his calf and hamstring muscles, meaning he finds it even harder to walk, he still manages often though.

He is due to start school in September and I am very very concerned, he is one of 4 (he is one of triplets-2 boys, Theo and Shaun and a girl Poppy and I have another son James), and his brothers and sister take amazing care of him, and the support and love they have for each other is amazing.

Anyway back to my question-are there any other mothers of CP children out there who can recommend any tips for helping him get on at school, I don' treat him any differently at home than his brothers or sister but I know how cruel school children can be!

Poppy was also born with clubfeet and a botched operation lead to her only having proper use of one of her feet.

Update:

jackie m -my twins were born with severe complications and died not long after birth..thanks for ripping that open again

Hiya, I don't know anything about CP but I do know a little about children, and although children can be cruel I think it is older children that can be, younger ones just seem more matter of fact and accept people how they are but they do ask blunt questions out of curiosity. I work in exams with older children and in a normal school and there are two disabled children there who are quite seriously disabled in different ways, they seem to mix in well.

I must say I think Jackie's comment is rather mean, you were only asking a general question and did not mean to offend or upset her. It is always more risky with multiple births, we all know about that, it is why we have more checks than for single births.

I have a daughter of 24 and identical twin girls who were 18 a few weeks ago.

He is one of triplets so they will also be starting school with him and they will be there to help him? Children will be rude to him but as he is 4 years old i am sure he will have already had some rude comments and he can deal with them - what happened to the twins you were expecting 3 years ago when you were looking for names?
