John Deere L120 20hp briggs and stratton. need some advice?

my JD is equipped with the RIO switch that has to be pressed when the blades are engaged in order to go backwards without killing the engine. It has an electric PTO switch. you can go forwards and backwards normally as long as the blades are not engaged.

the other day i just filled the tank and began mowing. after about 30 minutes i began to smell gas. i immediately knew what it was as i hopped off and realized i had left the gas lid off. this is where it gets tricky.

after this incident, i no longer had to press the RIO switch to go backwards, even with the blades engaged. the engine would not kill if i didnt press it.

when i was finished and shut off the engine, it kept running for about 10 seconds... hesitated a little and then finally shut off. I tried it a few times afterwards, after briefly checking the connections (RIO switch connector, key switch, hour meter, fuel shutoff solenoid, ACC power port, brake switch, etc.) nothing from an eye's view was loose or disconnected. I know how to test all of the switches and such, just not had the oppurtunity to do so just yet.

What i'm wondering is if anyone has any ideas as to what might be going on before i get in there and start trying to figure this out. any help or ideas would be appreciated.

add. info.....

has an intek Vtwin 20hp engine

nothing else was out of the ordinary

thanks again

Update:

all of you guys gave me some great answers. i started out checking swithes, wires, doing some tests and whatnot on them. everything kept checking out. i initially found the RIO switch connector dangling. i immediately said GOT IT. but to my surprise, still the same problem.

i removed the engine cover and started looking at both magnetos, when i shutt mine off, or a safety switch is "initiated" (i guess u could say) ((coming off the seat with blades engaged/failing to push the RIS switch when backing up/ etc.) it creates a ground to the magneto which grounds them out, thus shutting off the engine. the wire leading to the diodes that branches off to the magnetos had a spot about an inch long that looked as if a big chunk had been taken out. bare wires showing with just a hint of wire still running through which i guess was just enough to finally shut it off.

well when you back up and fail to push the RIS switch it also creates this ground that shuts the engine off, which it wasnt doing.

    hi,

I have to go with joe on this one, i believe its rio switch/wiring related . I dont think the spilled gasoline has anything to do with it, water or fuel spills are not uncommon in those areas...(your not the first guy ever left the gas cap off! I have!...probaby coincidental that this problem occured at the same time...a bad switch/wire might also explain the not shutting off right away...good luck Barry

That is a tricky one. I would first check the harness/wires going to the RIO switch. Sounds almost like the switch is faulty, and possible a wire grounding out. The fact that the mower shut off after 10 seconds, almost seems like one of the wires for the switch may be disconnected, but then when it dangles there, may be grounding out on the frame. I dont think it is fuel issue, I would look electrical, check for bare wires. You can try bypassing the switch manually, see if that still lets it run, then hook it back up. If it does not run anymore, then the switch is the problem. Good Luck.

    Hi,

Seems to me that maybe the spilled gas may have shorted a sensor that ties into those other controls,

take a careful look at the areas the gas came in contact with, then look at the manual and see if there are any sensors in those areas that may be damaged and replace them.
