i enjoy fixing things. anything. as a child i would tinker in the yard and take my fathers lawnmowers apart. i'm always trying to learn something new. i really enjoy helping people, not for any kind of reward or spotlight. i've just always been that way. i'm a nurse, a father, i've served in the military, and have a general curiosity as to how things work and i'm always learning something new. i try to help anyone i can, just like my late father. he didnt have much, but he'd give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. i'll never be on the leaderboard for this site, and dont give a damn if im not. so the points dont mean anything to me. it's enough to get a "that worked' you saved me some money" or etc. etc. whatever. if you dont like me. well then hate on, because theres a good chance i wont care about that. i just come on here to help out, period

  • a gift idea for my wifes birthday?

    we've been married for 9 years. She's going to be 30, and i'm 34. She is an amazing woman. She has lupus and a bone disease. a very sick individual. but still as beautiful as the day i met her. To me she only gets prettier with age. on to the question; her birthday is about 6 days away. she is away until then for medical reasons, and i want some good ideas for what to get her, or do for her. a ladies perspective might be preferred, but any will do.

    she LOVES cosmetics, okay she's a makeup FREAK. she's knows her stuff, and is very gifted. it's like an art. anyone can put makeup on, but when you're good at it, it's different. We have an ULTA kinda nearby, but i wouldn't know what to get her.... anyone that knows cosmetics, knows that it's freakin complicated/ so much variety. i was thinking a gift card from there, so she'd have to spend it there. she doesn't like to spend money on herself, and it always doing for others/ and our family. she's just that way.

    the reason i'm on here, is hoping i could get some good ideas maybe. i can't spend a lot of money, because #1 she'd kill me #2 we're on a limited budget because of her health reasons and others.

    she's the type that would give to and help anyone without thinking twice. she's an amazing woman, very strong, very beautiful, and she deserves something nice. I'm always cooking, cleaning, taking care of the children, etc. so don't include that stuff. i'd appreciate any ideas if anyone has any. i just want her bday to be very special. thx again for any suggestions

  • John deere L120 problem. Need help?

    It's kinda hard to make this short, don't really want to leave anything out. I have a john deere L120 riding lawn mower. It has the briggs Intek V-twin engine with DOHV's. It's about 10 years old roughly. The other day I left it on a bit of a slope (sideways), for awhile. When I got back on and started it up, it was smoking like keith richards. I kind of expected that. The next day I started it back up, and it just really didn't sound right, like it had a touch of a sputter in the idle. I figured since i'd be investigating the issue I went to Lowe's;

    I changed the fuel filter, the oil and oil filter, air filter and spark plugs. It started right up but didn't seem to have as high as an idle as it normally does when I open the throttle all the way. I proceded to drive it around and it's running at about half the power as it normally does. It didn't really have enough power to cut the grass when I engaged the PTO.

    The one curious thing I discovered is that even with the new plugs, the right cylinder plug is black as night (I just ran it a total of about 5 minutes with the new plugs).

    I checked the throttle, choke, and governor linkages and they appear to be doing their jobs, so I don't think I have a slipped cable and the throttle isn't opening enough. Why is the right cylinder flooding the plug. It is smoking still, but not near as bad.

    If anyone can help me out, i'd appreciate it. I'm not a beginner, and definitely not an expert. I have a service manual, it tells you how to do anything to the tractor, but not the WHY. No real troubleshooting advice given. and again, any advice will be appreciated. Sorry so daggone long

  • anyone who has wired an outbuilding or workshop?

    i have a building that i do my woodworking in. to make a long story short, i want to add power to it soon. I know how to do it (that part). i know i have to have the utilities marked, i also know where they are buried for the most part. if and when i do this project i know they're going to be in the way of where i'll run my RMC and wiring. My question is, how do you get around the utilities without destroying or cutting them. There will be no alternate path. The utilities from the pole run all the way around my house except the front yard (the buildings in the back of course). any info or input will be much appreciated

  • which table saw would you get?

    getting ready to get my first table saw. i can't afford a big job like i'd love to have. i can go no higher than 300 dollars, and that's pushing it. my options thus far are;

    craftsman... http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_009284630...

    this porter cable i looked at today and really liked. it's 300 dollars. i looked at it today and it's pretty nice.

    http://www.lowes.com/pd_89913-46069-PCB220TS_42948...

    wow, that's a long link. the skill and ryobi tables are roughly 200, but the ratings are horrible and i just don't feel that they'll be nearly as accurate and durable as the above. if anyone has any thoughts, let me know. i've never owned one. thanks in advance

  • need some clarification on electrical testing. continuity to ground?

    i've been having some minor issues with my John deere lawn tractor that i posted a question about yesterday or so. i have a repair and service manual and have been studying and learning the electrical aspects of the mower. i've learned a lot about how it's wired, what goes where, etc. i'm gonna have to start testing wires and connections to get down to the bottom of what's going on.

    Now what the question is....

    a lot of the tests are testing continuity to ground. lets say for instance; check 945 white wire for continuity to ground.

    what "exactly" is the ground part of it. are they referring to the negative post of the battery, the shielded ground or what.

    This whole ordeal has turned into the more i know, the less i understand. I have a continuity tester.

    I also have a multimeter, and if i'm correct can use the ohms setting to test for the resistance, which is also sort of like continuity???? just a little confused

    if you can help me at all, it would

  • John Deere L120 20hp briggs and stratton. need some advice?

    my JD is equipped with the RIO switch that has to be pressed when the blades are engaged in order to go backwards without killing the engine. It has an electric PTO switch. you can go forwards and backwards normally as long as the blades are not engaged.

    the other day i just filled the tank and began mowing. after about 30 minutes i began to smell gas. i immediately knew what it was as i hopped off and realized i had left the gas lid off. this is where it gets tricky.

    after this incident, i no longer had to press the RIO switch to go backwards, even with the blades engaged. the engine would not kill if i didnt press it.

    when i was finished and shut off the engine, it kept running for about 10 seconds... hesitated a little and then finally shut off. I tried it a few times afterwards, after briefly checking the connections (RIO switch connector, key switch, hour meter, fuel shutoff solenoid, ACC power port, brake switch, etc.) nothing from an eye's view was loose or disconnected. I know how to test all of the switches and such, just not had the oppurtunity to do so just yet.

    What i'm wondering is if anyone has any ideas as to what might be going on before i get in there and start trying to figure this out. any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    add. info.....

    has an intek Vtwin 20hp engine

    nothing else was out of the ordinary

    thanks again
