God is Love... REALLY?

how can Christians even attempt to justify the horrendous and abhorrent acts that God performs in the Bible, by arguing that ‘God is God, so whatever he does is justified’ Christians will say: He is the ultimate standard for what is just and unjust. He can kill who He pleases and is righteous in doing it, for example)

How can you possibly buy into this? God’s actions in the Bible are absolutely incompatible with our moral faculties. The Bible says that God will send the vast majority of human beings to hell “the place of eternal torment with weeping and gnashing of teeth” and that people sent there shall be “tormented with fire and brimstone . . . for ever and ever”

We know that torturing people is immoral! Certainly you would not think we should gather all the earth’s homosexuals, unbelievers, and other ‘sinners’ together and torture them until they die. This is ludicrous! It is absolutely incompatible with our human faculty of morality; our sense of empathy and sympathy for other human beings. Look at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; almost all contemporary societies endorse the idea that all human beings are entitled to certain universal and inalienable rights. This includes the belief humans should not be subjected to torture.

Now religious people will come up with all sorts of explenations and reasonings and justifications for these killings, or try to dismiss them as pre-Jesus (although of course Jesus also strongly advocates the laws of Moses), in order to somehow make the Bible morally "right" in a world that has moved a long way ahead since it was written. And fortunately so: in the end the important thing is that no sane person would try to follow the example of god or his prophets or find his or hers moral beliefs in the actual words of the Bible.

If the absolute source of morality is whatever God commands, no matter how abhorrent, than why would God have endowed human beings with a moral faculty that goes completely against what He commands? God is love?

The god of the Bible is a god of war... And claims to be the god of love. I don't understand it either.

Why can't Christians separate his personalities into different gods? It makes no sense to have such a vengeful, jealous, blood-thirsty god also be the ONE AND ONLY light, saviour, love, salvation, etc.

How do we know that there even is a moral or immoral standard? Evolutionarily speaking, cooperation is one way to succeed. Another is killing and eating your opponent. Morally speaking, those two things are equivalent.

To have any other standard accept that God does, in fact, set the standard of what is moral. He will not force anyone to be with him eternally and He allows you, freely, to be away from Him. The fact that being away from Him *is* Hell is not more His fault than the fact that the sharp blade of the knife is not the flat side.

Yes, God really is love. You need to know a couple of things about scripture. First, the natural mind alone cannot comprehend what's written. It takes being indwelled and led by God the Holy Spirit to do so. Second, you need to read scripture with understanding and see why God did what He did. That's called context.

God's command is His law of love: We are to love Him with all that we have and all that we are and we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. If you read the context of the passages that concern you, you'll probably find lots of disobedient choices. There are consequences for actions and choices. God tells us we need to choose between death and life and blessing and cursing.

Morals? Did you know that God made morals? God made the laws of the land and most of them still apply to the rest of the world that actually respects these laws and morals.

That means that God is the judge over all judges. In the world's view of court systems, the judge has to also abide by the courts law because the judge is a person, equal to us.

These laws dont apply to God because hes not a man to sin. The world belongs to him, and once you understand that he created it things might start making sense. God gives life and God takes life because of sin.

...since God (YHVH) is the Creator... He can do anything He want to do ! ...but since you're still stuck in the Old Covenant and hung-up on the 613 Laws...well, there's nothing I can hep you with unless you come into the Light of the New Covenant and the Blessing of Christ... First, consider reading the Book of John (4th Gospel of the New Covenant) to gain a better understanding of who "He" is and what "He's" all about ! (and) that the Freedom and Grace that "we" (who believe) all live under ! (unlike those who are still "bound" by the old Hebraic Law(s)

    Yes, god loves us.

Genesis 6:5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the LORD said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”

God demonstrates much love in the Bible.

Your emotional reaction to hell aside God is the one who goes out of His way to keep us out. He allowed His only begotten Son to be tortured and killed solely because He loves you so much He doesn't want you to go to Hell.

Learn the difference between parabolic language and literal. Until you know that you will never come to truth in the Bible. Its painfully obvious that you don't have even the slightest grasp of Biblical terminology.
