Coyotes aren't particulary afraid of lights, or people. They will usually maintain their distance unless they are in desperate straights. Coyotes are considered varmints in every state, as far as I know, and it is legal to shoot them at any time of the year. Laws in your community may have restrictions on how, where, and when you can shoot them, so you need to contact the local wildlife people to ask them about that.
Normally coyotes are pretty harmless, but if they have become "humanized" by people feeding them or they are sick, they can come right up to you and bite.

What ever you do don't put out poison like someone suggested. It is a good way to kill a pet of your neighbors and if they find out it was you, you could get animal cruelty charges against you. It is also illegal to poison coyotes. Your best bet is to start carrying a firearm with you if you are that scared. Most of the time you wont have to worry about a coyote but they have been known to attack people. Coyotes are a very adaptable species so they will adapt to your light very easily. You don't need to be that scared though. I have been hunting a lot on my own and never had a problem. My dad did have one fallowing him one night when he was getting down from his tree stand. It fallowed him closely for about 1/2 a mil until he got to his truck. He wasn't that worried though. He just got his hunting knife out just to be safe.

fence off your property, the light may help, but it may cause curiosity and make them want to explore, it is hard to determine what they would do as each react in a slightly different way. if you are really scared, I would maybe put a poison around your property edges within a meat for them to eat, do not use a poison against local legislations as you can get done for it, I'd use one which thins the blood out but there are lots. Again don't try to kill the coyotes if in the area you are in doesn't allow it.
try to educate yourself about them, this cam help your confidence as you are more aware of what they are like and how they usually behave.

Just stay inside, and pray, PRAY that they do not learn how to open doors.
