Do you consider Bill Nighy a good actor?
I love a lot of his older work, like Still Crazy, Love Actually, Blow Dry or The Girl in The Cafe. But lately I can't shake the feeling that he lost his versatility and is only playing "one face fits all lanky strangely moving" characters.
What do you think? Has he become lazy? Does he choose the wrong roles?
BQ: Your favourite role of Bill?
Now Now, he was Viktor in Underworld, not Marcus
meepers, I liked him as Davy Jones. But that was one of the last roles I really enjoyed him in. The technical crew also did a fantstic job to translate Bill's expressions into Davy's face, so that it was unmistakably Bill.

Bill Nighy has one of those distinctive voices (like Liam Neeson or Christopher Walken... not that they sound similar to one another but that they are each distinctly unique) that I could probably sit through a movie called "Bill Nighy Reads the Phone Book in his 'Scary Voice' and thoroughly enjoy it. Viktor in the Underworld movies, Davy Jones in the POTC sequels, and the gone-too-soon Scrimgeour in the most recent Harry Potter are all examples of the sort of character I like seeing him as.
I don't think he's become lazy or typecast. But then I really have rather liked him in the sorts of roles he's been gravitating towards lately.
Still, I do realize that he's a very versatile actor when he wants to be. I first heard and fell in love with the guy's voice when he played the role of Sam Gamgee in the BBC radio play adaptation of Lord of the Rings (which is about as far removed from any of his movie roles as one can get).

Bill Nighy is great. Have you seen Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest??? Though I suppose "strangely moving" is one way you could describe his portrayal of Davey Jones.

I think he's great in Sean of the Dead, but to be honest, I've never really thought of him as a versatile actor. He's a character actor that always plays characters that are similar.
