Is the net in danger of becoming censored, reformed and controlled by governments?

i keep hearing a lot of stories these days about either ; the government ' are ' going to regulate the internet - their going to regulate 'parts' of the internet or their going to start regulating social networking websites like twitter, facebook or even youtube .

that you will have to be careful what you type on the net in future and on any websites incase anybody takes offence ? and the era of internet anonymity is approaching an end .

as well as that, in general ive heard stories a lot about the governments of the west will soon take steps to regulate the net - block what websites they dont deem appropriate , restrict what sites you can visit etc .

heres a recent write up in the news recently about internet censorship provided by russia today;

'' A short while back we first told you about how Google had taken it upon themselves to censor any words that were associated with piracy sites from your searches. We also spoke of whispers that congress was working to ensure that the federal government would be able to unilaterally order search engines such a Google to block sites they put on a blacklist. Apparently the rumors were correct, because the Senate has introduced a bill that would give the government legal power to either disrupt or shut down completely, any websites "dedicated to infringing activities ".

id appreciate all views on this matter . its a subject very important to me as im against ' any ' internet regulation im in favor strongly of all freedom of expression.

thanks

    If the libel tourists and career politicians get what they want then it's official. We are living in a golden age of limitless internet freedom that will soon come to an end.

    Many might oppose censoring the internet, but as soon as the media and government start shrieking buzz phrases like "CYBERBULLYING", "TERRORISM", "FILTH" and "THINK ABOUT THE CHILDREN", the eminently gullible joe public will give up their freedoms overnight. Religious loonies and copyright Nazis are using YouTube as a practicing ground.

    yes it is always at risk of censorship. Mostly Democrats but republicans as well. Internet regulation is what libya and egypt did. Same thing with Hugo Chavez.

    Not that they would have the manpower to able to accomplish all out censorship. But having your finger on the button is enough for me.

    @Tammy you do realize that the confederate flag symbolizes the southern socialist party in American History?

    Yes, the think tanks of the UK government are working out how they can tax emails or tax searches on your computer or mobile phones.

    Also, how far to you go with freedom? Religiously offensive, Gore and

    paedophilia need to be removed.
