Female yorkie and her heat cycle?

I have a female yorkie that I bought off of someone about 2 months ago. She is 8 years old and we paid 500$ for her because she isn't done and she can be breed. The lady we bought her off of told us she would be due to go in heat sometime in may but its almost June and no sign..

Could this be because we missed her heat or she could be delayed?

Also I would like to no of some signs to tell if she's in heat because apparently their spot of blood is really hard to see.

    Hi Jase,

The heat cycle for dogs is just like humans in that it can be very unpredictable. I would not worry as yet.

There are several signs a dog displays when the heat cycle is about to begin. Here is a site to help you really look for all those signs. It probably will be more difficult because your dog is so small. Just know that you are learning, keep careful notes as you are going through this first season with you.

Here is a site that explains things in great detail.

You may want to look to see if there is a Yorkie breeder in your area who could help you during the time. Check with your local kennel club.

Good luck with your new girl.

    Yorkie Breeding Cycle

  • 1 decade ago

An 8 year old female is too old to safely have a litter of pups, especially a small breed like the Yorkie. The older they get the more erratic the heat cycles, showing that the hormones are kicking down and breeding could dangerous for the dog.

Sounds like you got "taken" by paying that amount of money for a dog that age.

Just a clarification to add. At her age she is certainly capable of becoming pregnant. But she would be at high risk for complications. Most professional breeders retire their brood females and spay by age 6 or 7. I once attended the labor and birth of a Beagle bred when she was 11. She belonged to a neighbor who hadn't retired her. She'd had litters before, but by her age her egg production was way down and she only had a single puppy. Because it had all the resources to itself, it was very large and it was almost impossible for it to pass. We were out in the country during an ice storm, so it was not possible to get her to a vet. I did manage to get the puppy out with KY jelly and some pulling, but it was traumatizing to the old mother and she took a long time to recover. We were well aware there was a strong possibility we'd have to put her down if the puppy could not be removed, dead or alive. A Yorkie is much smaller than a Beagle and more prone to difficulties than they are.

uhh yeah - this just sounds like a backyard breeder trying to encourage others to be a backyard breeder as well (others being YOU).

The woman you bought this yorkie from is a moron, and quite frankly you are in that same category if you believe all the BS that she fed you in order to pocket your $500.

8 years old IS TOO OLD TO BREED ANY DOG, let alone a small breed like the Yorkie - she could EASILY die birthing the puppies! Like I said, this woman you bought the dog off of is straight up retarded and it makes me angry that she got your $500 just to be even more stupid and have reason to continue breeding pet worthy dogs and giving awful/deadly advice to vulnerable people like yourself making them think it is ok and safe to breed an 8 year old Yorkie.

Read about "backyard breeders" and why they are nothing but greedy and scumbags. All they care about is YOUR profit - nothing more. Reputable breeders breed to better the breed (as in, they do OFA's, health test screenings, temperament testing, have breed mentors, only breed dogs who have shown in AKC dog shows and have won championships, breed dogs at an APPROPRIATE age (when the dog is 2-5 years old) etc).

****Keep in mine, a "pure" bred" dog DOES NOT automatically mean the dog is "breeding material" - there are so many badly bred pure bred dogs out there, which is why breeding CHAMPION TITLED perfect conformation show dogs is the only acceptable breeding - everything else is nothing but a contributing factor to the millions of dogs and puppies euthanized across the USA every single year in the shelters.

Don't be stupid and listen to this bozo woman - get your PET WORTHY dog spayed and enjoy her as a PET for once, not a commodity. Don't add to the over-population of innocent puppies and dogs dying every day in the shelters by bringing even more pet worthy dogs into this world. Read about the facts of backyard breeding and the over-population of dogs, as well as the risks of breeding older dogs - if you are smart, you will have no problem making a decision to NOT breed her.

I would like to say others... shame on you!! show some compassion and concerns.. give positive advise rather putting her down. Yes Jas your dog pass her prime for a healthy litter & pregnancy. As others mention.. go to a reputable breeder to enhance the breed quality. You would have to pay high dollar but start researching for a breeder and ask LOTS of questions. Be sure this is what you want to do.. litter of pups take ALOT of your time CLEANING UP POOP, FEEDING,CLEANING POOP, then the vet bills. ugh... Use your older dog as a nurse aide.. they are awesome at that job. Best wishes...

If you don't know the signs of a dog going into heat, you shouldn't be breeding her.

If you plan on breeding your dog at 8 years old, shame on you.

Do your research, become a licensed breeder, and breed top of the line dogs.

Your were scammed by someone telling you an 8 year old dog can breed. The normal breeding age is between 2 and 5. You can spay her any time now.

Do they ever just stop having cycles

You got ripped off, 8 years old is too old to breed.
