What makes Max Von Sydow's performance in Strange Brew special?

Strange Brew is a puerile comedy, yet Max Von Sydow's villain is genuinely frightening and believably evil despite the ridiculousness of his plot. What is it about his performance that adds a surprising depth to Strange Brew?

It is not so much his performance (which is always wonderful) but why such a high caliber actor was involved with a no-budget Canadian comedy in the first place?

At the time he was known for the "Seventh Seal" and as Father Merrin in "The Exorcist". He also had done a string of VERY serious European art films i.e "Jugando con la muerte" as well as playing the villain of a high profile Bond film that came out at the same time "Never say never again"

He was like Leslie Nielson; known for serious roles. Playing it straight in comedies (Flash Gordon) just adds to the effect. Remember Micheal Caine's serious take as Scrooge in "A Muppet Christmas Carol"?

Why did Sydow do it? Well, I am a Canadian and I remember as a kid reading that he had done the film because he enjoyed doing the comedy "Flash Gordon" 1980 and he had property in Canada at the time. He also rewrote the dialogue that Rick Moranis gave him.
