Is It Safe to Shoot On My Land?
I live on 20 acres of land that is essentially a rectangle, facing north-south. I would estimate that the dimensions are about 5 acres wide by 10 acres long. The back part has a good cluster of trees and there is a river that flows back there. There is about 100 yards from the end of my property to the property across the river.
Can I shoot pistols and rifles safely from about 10 acres in?
Rifles range from .17hmr- 30.06
Pistols from .22LR-.45 Colt
Thank you!
I already know that it is legal to shoot on my land. I live in a rural, farming area. I 'm worried about strays crossing the river mostly.
Ok, I just realized that my dimensions did not make sense. my land is about 1 football field wide by about 2 1/5 football fields long.

if you build a good berm and place old railroad ties in front of it, which also would be where you would have your target board attached you should not have any problem with any bullets going astray, and if you place it at the 200 yard spot I think the railroad ties would stop it completely, if you cannot build a berm(I know everyone does not own a Cat) you could build you a good backstop out of 2 x 12, at least 8 feet in length but make it a box, using 4x4 posts at the corners and fill the empty space in the center with earth, this will stop any bullet that you will shoot out of your 30-06, and you could build a 4 foot by 4 foot at 25 yards for you pistols. just a suggestion

You main problem is assuring that the bullets don,t leave your property. Remember, a bullet can travel over a mile after being fired. Most people that plan on shooting erect either a substantial earthen berm or make a backstop out of heavy logs. There are metal bullet traps available that will stop most pistol bullets, but higher power rounds would likely tear these up. Also the traps are fairly small making it possible for a stray round to escape your property. You can contact the National Rifle Association (NRA) at www.nra.org for information on how to build home range. Remember, safety first! Or as we say in the old country: å®å ¨ç¬¬ä¸

Acres are an area and not a distance. An acre can be 132' wide and a 1/16 mile long or 1' wide and 8 1/4 miles long. You would need some kind of back stop sufficient to stop the bullet and big enough tht you won't miss the back stop.
