Would Joe Calzaghe get more credit and respect if he was American?

Joe seems to get a lot of unfair criticism for some reason, especially from American fans.

Why is this?

I think Joe Calzaghe would get a lot more respect if he was American. He was undefeated super middleweight champion for 11 years and made 21 successful defenses, that record is second only to Joe Louis, he also moved up at the age of 36 to narrowly outpoint the still dangerous Bernard Hopkins for the Ring magazine light heavyweight title. He was never beaten from being an 18 year old amateur until he retired almost 20 years later. The reason he gets a lot of criticism from American fans is because America is a very insular Country, if you haven't done it there the average man will have never heard of you. Calzaghe only fought twice in America so all most Americans saw of him were his last two fights vs Hopkins and Jones and neither of those were Calzaghe's best performances, therefore to most Americans Calzaghe was some British bum who beat a few other British bums, fought in the US against a couple of old men and retired. If he had fought his whole career in the US I think he would be rightly considered as a great fighter.

He would get more credit and respect from Americans, the rest of the world would still recognize him for what he is/was and that is an exceptional boxer.

American fans (some I should say,not all) are too quick to write off British boxers in my opinion.I think its because we both speak English and have much in common so there is friendly rivalry but there is a school of thought that someone who doesnt fight in America in their career are no good yet the same people saying this think nothing of an American boxer that never leaves America.

He would get 100% more credit though if he were American, definitely.

I hate to say it but American fight fans can't seem to wrap their heads around the idea that there was a dominate british champion. Remember the disrespect Hopkins showed before the Calzaghe fight " A white boy will never beat me"! Its that kind of thinking that hinders them from giving proper respect. Calzaghe is one of the greatest fighters I've ever seen. His win over jeff lacy and Kessler were brilliant performances.

The reason he gets criticism from American fans is because he retired after fighting Bernard Hopkins to a close decision and declined the rematch, and for fighting a shell of Roy Jones Jr. before and has the nerve to think he beat the best that American has to offer.

Joe Calzaghe greatly relied on his hand speed and would probably be well tested by a fighter that is just as fast as he is and could match his speed like Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell, Chad Dawson, or even Lucian Bute, but Joe Calzaghe chose to retire somewhat unproven without fighting those young lions with speed.

Criticizing him for not fighting in America is really unfair. He's the champ so contenders should've fought him in his backyard.

He'd get more credit if he defeated better versions of jones and hopkins and did not get dropped by both.
