Pot to pot transplanting?

I received a little avocado plant as a present and although new leaves are growing (I haven't killed it yet! A new record!) it's starting to show signs of stressing out (as per google anyway). I'm pretty sure it's stressing out as it's over due to be transplanted as when I received the plant I was told it was about time to transplant it and that was *cough* 2 months ago *cough*.

I've...never transplanted a thing before so...

1. It's in a 6'' pot now...what size of pot do I need next? (it's dangerous for the plant to get a pot that is too big right?)

2. I was told i need to get loose soil so the water can drain. Is there a...term or type for this soil so I can actually find it?

3. How do I ensure I don't damage the roots when I transplant it?

4. How do you transplant it? Take a shovel and dig it out of it's pot? Turn it upside down? *shrug*

5. Is it bad to move the plant around a lot (pot and all)?

6. Is "misting" just spraying it with water?

Also, if it matters, I have no intention of planting it outside.

Actually avocados prefer to be rootbound. So make sure that's really the problem. If you can see roots sticking out of the bottom of the pot, it's ok to repot. Choose an 8 inch pot with a hole in the bottom. Now get it ready. Use bagged potting soil. Put jaggedy pebbles or pieces of broken flowerpot in the bottom of the new pot, then add a couple inches of soil and set it aside.

When you're about to repot, water the plant til the water runs out the bottom. Let it sit for half an hour. Then put your hand over the dirt with the stem sticking up between your fingers. Pick up the pot and flip it over, with your hand still holding the top dirt. Let it rest on that hand and thump the sides of the pot with the other hand. This is messy and that's ok. The plant should come loose.

Move the plant to the new pot. Add or take away soil from underneath until the top of the roots are sitting 2 inches beneath the pot's rim. Now fill in the rest with bagged soil. Don't pack it hard and don't bury the stem deeper than it already was in its old pot. Water it again til it runs out the bottom. then continue to care for the plant as usual.

Misting is spraying with a very fine mist of water, like fog instead of rain.
