You need to address the shin splints. You have a viscous cycle between the knees and shin splints. Some time there are underline medical problems that are causing them such as diabetes. Often times it is caused by your running technique or improper shoes or your body is out of alignment{ one hip is higher than the other} If you have a Sports Medicines Clinic/Sports Medicine Doctor in your town that would be great. Not only are the Doctors active but they can help you with your special needs.Ask the coaches and other runners. I worked for Navy Fitness

Depending on how bad your shin splints are, the pain can extend into your knee. But if you feel tenderness in your knee area, it isn't caused by the splints. Also, if you twisted your knee or hyper extended it, it is a separate injury.
