help! wrong transmission fluid?

I was in a hurry so I bought the dexron III transmission fluid and put in in the car only to find out that I was supposed to put ATF+4 for my Dodge intrepid 2004. The store I was in didn't have the ATF+4 and I didn't want to wait till tomorrow to put it in since my transmission fluid was pretty low. What the hell do I need to do now? Should have gone to auto zone but was too tired due to the effing heat wave.

I don't have any personal experience but you should talk to some people at a transmission shop or a reliable auto repair facility and see what kind of information you can acquire. Personally I don't see where a quart or two would cause any harm but that is just my opinion and is not based on first hand experience with your year of car.

it could rob you of 20-30 k miles of transmission life. ASAP, get fluid and filter changed using correct fluid. smart mechanic knows how to disconnect transmission cooler lines to flush out wrong fluid.

  • the thing about the mopar atf is the noise suppressors in the fluid. the fluid that you have will work the same but you may hear noises that are less than desirable. you might be able to find an additive to counter act that but i am not sure.

The safest and the best "cover your butt" solution is to have a full flush on the transmission by an oil change shop or garage. You may not have too much issue, but still talk to a mechanic, or at the very least, call the service department at your local Dodge dealer.

leave it alone it wont hurt a thing

you do need to find the leak however

it does not take a trans long to burn up when it runs low on fluid
