Carrier Infinity Thermostat - install question (HVAC heat pump integrate with existing GAS heat)?

I am currently having a central AC with heat pump being installed in my home. I plan on using the heat pump as an efficient means of heating during late spring and early fall and use the existing natural gas hydronic heating system during winter. The SEARS salesman has stated that the new HVAC and existing heat systems can be operated by one thermostat. (an Infinity SYSTXCCUID01-B) This is a digital thermostat which uses a 4-wire communication bus to control the Carrier Compressor and Air Handler units.

How does this thermostat control the existing furnace. Does it contain a relay to operate the Gas heat via the original thermostat wire OR do I need to have another control component added to the old furnace (a realy board) which would be operated using the 4-wire communication bus?

I would like to have some facts before I start questioning my contractor and electrician.

You would be better off to buy the good stuff from a Carrier Dealer rather than Sears. The salesman should have told you that the Infinity control requires a new Infintiy furnace and will likely not work well (and certainly not get the desired efficiency) with your older furnace. When properly matched, the thermostat serves as the microprocessor unit that polls the connected loads and configures itself just as a plug and play component does on newer computer systems. I would be really hesitant to buy a system like this from Sears but you will love it if you get it installed by someone who knows what he/she is doing.

Source(s): A contractor with dozens of successful Infinity installs and who regularly is called for service by people who bought equipment from Sears and cannot get service. (Have two on my own home and think it is the best system Carrier has every built).

I've never installed one of those, but I know Honeywell makes an IAQ they call it, its thermostat uses 3 wires and is wired to a circuit board, from there the circuit board is the brains of the outfit, sending the 24V needed to operate any combination of things - furnace, heat-pump, humidifier, de-humidifier, electronic air cleaner, 1st & 2nd stage heating and cooling, fresh air, or whatever could exist in the system. What and how it operates is controlled by how the thermostat is programmed. I would imagine what you are looking at is similar. All the control wiring is low voltage that goes to the thermostat and to the mother-board - that stuff the HVAC guys will hook up, the only thing the electrician would be doing is supplying 208-230 voltage to the air handler and 208-230 to the outdoor unit if it isn't already there from the panel, the HVAC contractor simply has to tie onto it with the equipment.
