COPD has many faces. Generally it is caused by extrinsic factors such as smoking, chemical exposure, occupational exposure, etc. There is a form of emphysema that can be caused genetically by an alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency. The various forms of COPD have similar features such as a gradual reduction in FEV1 and increased lung compliance which can lead to air trapping and hyperinflation some of them lead to mucus hypersecretion and decreased ciliary function. It is a disease process, that can be exacerbated by respiratory infections. There is no cure, only maintenance and controlling it. To be certain if you have COPD you should see a physician and get a pulmonary function test. This is just a brief, generic explination of the process.

Emphysema has very clear genetic pre-deposition. External factors such as smoking just speed up the degeneration process. Currently mainstream medicine provides symptom relief without cure and the underline degeneration continually proceed. Late stage COPD patients have lots of secondary complications such as gastrointestinal problems like acid reflex (heart burn) and congestive heart failure. COPD patients very easy to get infection when catch cold and have tough time to recover from it.
Some of the well-known altenative practitioners have been able to provide semi-permernant fix for COPD. They can eliminate the symptoms of COPD and make COPD patients not very susceptible to cold or flu. COPD patients just need to periodically have a meintence treatment to be symptom free. Check this webpage for the list of those doctors.
