can I cut the output shaft on a small engine?

the output shaft on my 6.5 HP gas engine is about 1/2" too long to mount a new Cat pump on the power washer, can I cut the shaft off with a sawzall and dress the end, or add washers? I don't want to change the shaft.

Probably better to add spacers to adjust the pump fitment.

Much better proposition to space the pump out rather than shorten the shaft. if using washers get engineering washers which are all the same thickness rather that normal hardware store ones which vary in thickness which may put the shaft out of alignment
