What are the "bugs" that leave something that looks like "spit" on the leaves on my plants and bushes?

And how to get rid of them?

    ..Hey Dennis my bro!,my mom (Loraine) is a Horticulture 'GURU',and i just went visit to ask her,man for the first time in my life ,this is the only thing she did not know the Exact name and Latin Family description of,.. if its a thin kind of flat long bug,her nickname for it is a "Sapsucker Bug,and or spit bug",but for the life of her she didnt recall its given proper origin grouping ..hope this helps,..ohh & she stated it wont harm plants other than the Sap sucked Spit it left from the last tree or bloom it sucked that ugly spit looking stuff on ya greenery ,,,7 dust..or lime the base of the soil around it ,the old folks make a Lime powder and water "whitewash" mixture and paint the lower diameter of pecan trees to prevent it and some diff types of furry looking worms from building ugly looking nests to hatch a ton more of them critters.but your bug hops and jumps like a flea does,so if whatever it sucking sap and nector from is near it the lime around the base soil wont be 100% ok..and i got my 4L30E tranny in my '99 Isuzu Rodeo done due to your answer guide dude,..gracious amigo! ,wallyb

    If you're referring to a transparent/silvery trail, it sounds like you've got snails or slugs crawling around. They hang around my house for some reason, too. I always see dried up slime trails on my front steps and sidewalk in the morning (they come out at night).

    There are lots of sites that mention how to get rid of snails, but here is one I was reading about on how to do it without killing them.

    I believe those are aphid eggs, you can use a bug spray to get rid of them.
