hot water heater making popping sounds?
My hot water heater is making popping sounds when it is heating up the water. Sounds like popcorn popping inside it, but a little muffled. Been doing it for maybe 2 to 3 months. Anyone have any idea what is happening? Is it something to be worried about?

this could be a different choice of things, do you have an out side water source to feed animals ? are you on a well? How old is your heater , have you ever drained your heater to clean out the mineral deposits? Do you own your place if not then have you contacted your landlord of this problem?
1. A water tank that is filled and is drained and filled by continuous drinking can cause a hammering sound.
2. A heater that is full mineral deposits can cause the popping sound.
3. A constant outside leak can cause this too.
4. Check your thermostats to see if they are the same
Source(s): I had a hammering sound and it was from water troughs when the water was at a fill level and the cows kep drinkin - Anonymous5 years ago
If this an Electric Heater, it is most likely the heating element gone out. They less then $10 at Lowe's/Home Depot. Be very sure the electric to the heater is off. Remove the metal panel, if there one top and bottom, check the top first. Most likely when the pipes were re-work the water level go down in the heater (Siphon effect) and the top element overheat and burn out. You may want to check both. Use a garden hose to drain the heater. Once it repair, be sure to fill well with water before turning the electric back on to the heater, let it set for air to settle and refill, do this by turning on a hot water faucet.. Also, I would use a Volt Meter to be sure the electric is off, regardless of what the Breaker Box say. One good thing about Professionals, they make mistakes too! ;-)

go to a shop that sells water heaters..they will probably give you some tablets to put in the heater to soften the water.
