    1. At what age did you get your first horse?

    6

    2. What breed was your first horse?

Quarter Horse (he was 14.2 pony)

    3. Do you own/lease a horse?

    own

    4. Describe the horses you own/lease (breed, age, discipline, ect)

Quarter horse, Levi, 14 yo, western pleasure

    Holsteiner, Boomer, 9 yo, jumper

    5. What's your favorite thing to do with your horses?

ride bareback, lay on their back while they're grazing and just look up into the sky.

    6. What's the story behind your horse?

I got Levi when I was 6, and I got Boomer for my 16th birthday (all of my friends think I'm crazy for wanting a horse instead of a car or something, but that's just me!)

    7. Do you ride western/english/bareback?

    all

    8. How often do you ride?

    everyday

    9. What is something unusual/funny that your horse does?

Boomer always sticks out his tongue when he wants a treat, and Levi is terrified of butterflies or moths! I guess he thinks they're going to eat him :) Not the saber-tooth butterfly!!

    10. Is your horse laid back or hot-headed?

Levi is pretty laid back (except with butterflies), and Boomer is normally good, but he has his days.

    11. What is something you want to do with your horse before you die?

Go camping with them, mainly just create great memories

    12. Why do you love horses?

Because they love me, unconditionally. It doesn't matter if I'm not wearing any makeup, my hair's a mess, tears streaming down my face...they're always there for me.

    13. What's your favorite breed, and why?

Quarter Horse, just because they are so versatile

    14. If you could create the "perfect" horse what would he/she look like?

    17.1 hh, bay, blaze

    15. Have you ever had a "horse scare" (bad accident, horse getting sick, ect)

Yes, Levi was laying in his stall, and he wouldn't get up, he was sweating and looked really distressed. We called the vet out, she said it's probably sand colic, so she had to pump out his stomach with a tube, and he had to have emergency surgery. I was so scared.

    16. Do you let other people ride your horses, or are you picky?

Levi is fine with everyone, but with Boomer, you have to know deal with some of his shenanigans, so I am somewhat picky, but I just have to feel that you can handle it.

    17. Anything else you want to add?

    Fun survey!

    18. Can I see pictures?! I love pictures!! :D

    1. Twelve and 362 days

    2. Standardbred

    3. I still own my first horse

    4. She's a bay 16hh Standardbred mare, just turned 7 last month. I just use her for trails

    5. Grooming her and teaching her tricks

    6. She used to be a trotter on the race track but doesn't like to race or big crowds for that matter. She really just needs a loving home and a best friend that has time to ride her personally, and I can give her that.

    7. English and bareback

    8. I wish 24/7, but sadly only 3-4 times a week

    9. Whenever I walk in the paddock she bolts to the gate with her top lip up

    10. VERY LAID BACK.

    11. Teach her to smile, jump without hands and gallop bare back

    12. They give me freedom and happiness that people just can't provide for me. It's that simple.

    13. Paints; they're gorgeous and so gentle

    14. My horse.

    15. I was galloping bareback on a pony and she spooked and I fell underneath a cow

    16. I'll admit I get a bit jealous but if it's for the benefit of my horse, I'm all ears.

    17. Her name is Maggie

    1. 16- he was my 16th birthday present, in fact.

    2. Half Arab, Half Welsh.

    3. Own, and have owned horses off and on ever since I was 16. Have ridden since the age of 6, and started formal lessons at age 9.

    4. My current horse is a foundation bred Appendix Quarter Horse mare that I do dressage on. She also jumps and is a retired polo horse.

    5. Doing dressage and also trail riding every now and then.

    6. I was given my present horse after it became clear that she was too slow and lazy for polo. She orignally belonged to my sister, who plays as a hobby. She has traits which make her an ideal dressage horse or lightweight show hunter.

    7. English all the way, although I have ridden Western. I grew up riding in a Western saddle. I only ride bareback on horses that have lots of padding- it's not something I am all that comfortable doing.

    8. As often as possible, weather and schedule permitting. Our arena is outside, and it's not covered, so I have to ride when the weather allows me to.

    9. She likes to have her chest scratched- she has a sweet spot there, and will make the funniest faces when I rub it with the brush or my hand.

    10. She's very laid back and lazy. I have to use spurs when I ride for that reason.

    11. Breed her and raise a few foals from her (she's exceptionally well bred herself, and NO, I am not a BYB. Any foal I get from her will always have a home, whether as a polo horse or as a dressage horse for me. All colts will be gelded when they reach the appropriate age- we are not allowed to keep stallions in our area by covenant.)

    12. This is a toughie- it's sort of like asking why the sun rises where it does. I love horses for lots of reasons- too many to name here.

    13. Probably the Thoroughbred, because they are so versatile and can do so many things.

    14. Another toughie. I don't know if I could ever create the "perfect" horse.

    15. Bad accidents and sickness- yes, I've seen my share. The worst accident I ever saw involved a horse that basically committed suicide by running into a barbed wire cattle fence at full speed. He was cut wide open, and had to be destroyed due to shock and blood loss. I've never seen so much blood in any one place in my life, either before or since. I've also seen my share of bad colics, founder cases, and a few other accidents.

    16. Sometimes, I let other people I know well and trust ride my mare, especially when I think she can benefit from it.

    17. No, not really.

    18. I would post a picture of my horse, but my computer won't allow it.

    1. I will probably be 22-24 by the time I actually buy Exception

    2. Paso Fino

    3. I currently do neither. I was going to lease for the summer but I can't afford it. I get to ride and care for her for free during the school year.

    4. Paso Fino, 11, trailing riding, chestnut with roaning throughout, mare

    5. Just go out on trails and have fun/relax

    6. I don't really know. From what I know she was owned by an older couple, sold/traded (her sale wasn't 100% complete when I took an interest in her, so my trainer completed the deal by giving the owners a stallion from our barn they really liked and we did nothing with) to my trainer as a brood mare. She is being used as a lesson/club horse.

    7. English in a western saddle or english saddle, depends on what is available.

    8. I ride 2-3 times a week during the school year, hardly at all over the summer (not near horses that I have access all the time due to the owner and I having different work schedules and she wants to be able to ride with me if I ride).

    9. She is terrified at jumps! I've tried taking her over a small jump a few times, she doesn't like it.

    10. Somewhere in between. She has her hot-headed moments like any horse/mare

    11. Actually compete

    12. No idea! I just do even if there are times I've gone through where I shouldn't.

    13. Paso Fino or draft breeds. I love the Pasos personality and gait. They are very loving horses who have a lot of spunk. I love draft horses just because they are so cute to me. Gentle giants :)

    14. Perfect conformation for a Paso Fino. Tri-colored Tobiano who can fino fino with the best of them (it is extremely extremely rare to see a pinto Paso Fino who can gait well, most are bred for color not gait and are trail horses). It's personality would be 100% sweetheart who will do anything I ask for, and doesn't pull on the reins when doing fino fino (a lot of fino horses tend to do this as they want to go faster).

    15. I've had two riding scares. The first one a horse reared on me almost going backwards (I realize now it was my fault). I was pretty shaken up. The second one I took a fresh horse into the outdoor arena and he started bucking so I turned his head to the side but lost my balance and fell off. I was so sore that the next two days I couldn't walk. The first one scared me more, not sure why. On the ground I've had the first horse charge me while lunging. i've had horses get out on me before (had the gate shut to the indoor arena while I was letting a new 3 year old filly play in there ($65,000 filly one of the boarders got for christmas) and when to go put another horse in the roundpen on the other side of the farm. I came back and the gate was wide open, her stall was still open, and I panicked. Luckly she was found not to far away with her head shoved into a feed bag. The last scare I had was a few months ago. I had a mare tied up to the hitching post and the stable hand came through with a tractor and a huge roundbale (we were short on hay due to flooding so we were cutting up the cattle's roundbales since we had plenty) and needless to say she freaked out. She somehow got her front legs over the post while her head was still tied down and ended up slipping. Thankfully the worst injury she got was from the halter giving her a rope burn, which shouldn't have bothered her much since she has a nasty habit of finding something to cut her face on.

    16. I am picky. I am supposed to since she is not techinally mine, but I don't like other people riding her. Normally during class (I've taken two Horse Science classes for my Companion Animals minor since my trainer is the professor for those classes and they are taught at the barn) I'll ride her first, then when it is time to switch I'll offer her up to ride, but usually no one else wants to. There were like 3 times total someone else did speak up and it was because my trainer pushed them to ride and she was the only horse that was available she felt they would be comfortable on. She is very touchy so a lot of people don't like riding her.

    17. not really lol

    18. I would like to post a pic but neither flickr or photobucket will load for me right now.

    um...11

she was a fell but a bit of everything really i guess

i owned her never leased before

her age was not accurate she was over 10 that's all we could tell, she was quite short and stocky about 13.2. really dark bay with dapple patches.

We liked jumping and going for hacks.

Star's history was unkown to us but she'd been ill-treated we couldn't get near her she was so afraid that if she couldn't run she would attack. She kicked loads of people and even a coupe of our horses (i helped out at a rescue). She was classed as dangerous paddocked alone and a sign was put up for visitors asking them to keep away. Everyone in our little town knew about Star and she was called 'The Demon' horse. People hated her and she hated people, everyone avoided her and none of the staff could touch her. So she just sort of got forgotten about. I'd bought her but everyone had decided she was two dangerous for an 11 year old to be around so they ,ade sure i kept away from her and knowing how much i wanted a horse they gave me another to take care of until an 'alternative place' could be found for Star. In secret they wanted to have her put down. When i heard about this i began to sneak of to see Star and the thing 2was i was the owner and they couldn't have her put down without my permission so i didn't give it no matter how they begged.

I struggled with Star all on my own and she was very scary at times but i persisted and she got to know i wouldn't harm her and gradually she'd come up to sniff my leg when i was in her field and i finally got a head collar on her which made things easier.

Then a lady joined the staff who was experienced with troubled horses and though she was very busy she found time every day to help me with Star. It was hard she was a bitter horse and so unpredictable but she did lead reining, grooming her (which was tense because hse'd kick randomly) then lunging and long-reining and finally riding. We schooled her and hacked her out this went on for a year and a half. Gradually the staff began to go and see Star and finally she was let out of her 'excile' paddock to mix with the other horses.

We had a young new forest filly we'd recued from the sales and she got bullied by the other horses and Star befriended the filly and protected her. Star's attitude and behaviour trained she wasn't afraid anymore and people weren't afraid of her.

People in the town started talking when they saw me riding her out and they admired her as the horse that had turned her life around.

In the spring she was asked to do a charity event and give children pony rides and she loved it! She loved the children and everyone wanted to ride her and after that people asked about her all the time.

We had a perfect spring and summer together and Star made lots of friends, the autumn was even better then she got very sick one day amd she died.

I was very upset and didn't really want to talk to anyone. Then my parents brought he a news paper article and it was all about Star. A journalist in our local area had heard about this wild horse who became the love of the town and had written about her! The owner of the rescue called me down and people had left piles of flowers outside the gate and 'sorry' cards. It was so nice that an unloved horse died so loved.
