Atheists/Skeptics- Please help me with the following: The Bible is a book about....for....made by ...?

Atheist / Skeptics,

Need you to fill in the blanks on this one based on what YOU think the bible is all about.

The bible is a book....

...about......

What do think the main themes of the bible are?

...for......

who is the intended audience?

...made by....

who do you think wrote it and what was their motive?

Some of the usual responses.

"book of myths", "an imaginary God", "written by desert dwelling goat herders", "comforts those afraid of death", "written when they didn't understand science like we do", "to explain lightning and earthquakes".

Let me know what you think is behind our holy book.

Thanks / Brad M

There is no proof to say anyone who wrote the Bible or told it's stories ever became rich until the twentieth century evangelists.

There's no doubt stories are told in fable form because the uneducated people didn't always understand or listen to educational material (history, science, news etc.) any differently to a child. All written education in the world today originated from religious teachings (schools and universities were funded through religion). Without this base we would still be stuck in caves not knowing what was going on in the next village because the education has helped us understand each other.

Educated people have always been those we turn to for knowledge. If they didn't have reason to believe in God they wouldn't have had those beliefs passed on. When they were being persecuted by the Romans it would surely have been a better option to have denied God but they didn't. Times don't change but people always think they know better.

It wasn't that long ago 99% of the Flat Earth Society's members were atheists because they wouldn't accept what religious teachers told them and dismissed a round earth as a conspiracy by the Christians to gain power.

ABOUT: Well it's a collection of works by dozens of authors, and in some cases possibly groups of authors, that was written over thousands of years, and covers a wide range of topics.

FOR: Again the intended audience probably differs from section to section depending on the author and the time frame.

MADE BY: Well I already answered this. Again their motives would have differed from author to author.

The Bible is about myths and legends – not all related – made by or derived from neighbouring peoples from the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean.

Examples include the Sumerian creation epic Enuma Elish from which the Genesis Creation Story was probably derived, probably via the Canaanites/Phoenicians, and the Noah story is almost identical to the story of Utnapishtim in the epic of Gilgamesh.

It's the religious writings of a particular culture. The main theme is the authors telling the people how god wants them to behave. Included in that is some history from the point of view of how well or badly each leader obeyed their god and how that god either blessed or didn't bless the people.

It was written by a variety of authors, probably all religious leaders, to convey their beliefs about their god.

No need to fill in any blanks.

The bible, like the Qur'an is a collection of meaningless fiction and has no place in the 21st century!

It belongs in our primitive past as does the "god" it purports to reveal!

In this age of Science and Reason what I think "is behind your holy book" and the motivation of it's adherents is highly questionable and suspect!

The book is a collection of stories basically trying to explain the world around them. Trying to give their argument for a certain morality/belief more credibility, is the result of chinese whisper, boredom, simple storytelling of people who traveled from village to village etc.

It's intended purposes was to entertain people and the stories were made by storytellers which most likely had it as a profession and survived with it.

Other stories try to glorify certain characters. Making them superhuman and over time ofcourse the stories went wilder and wilder, as it always does.

The evolution(slow change) of these stories isn't any different then the evolution of the stories from Europe in the 17th century.

The old testament was a book written for the jewish people to focus on their cultural history to make them a people and give them a identity.

the new testament, was all written well after the supposed death of jesus and mostly tales of here say. Again it was probably intended to be stories for a group of people to give them a identity. in many cases some of the books or at least verses in the new testament were deliberately falsified to make people believe.

So all in all they are stories and many untruths in there for a variety of reasons.

The Bible is a book about life, the universe and everything written by primitive ancient people for primitive ancient people.

It's a unique insight into life thousands of years ago when people had little actual understanding of the world around them.
