Video card 'Driver' question? (Probably embarrassing)?

Try to not laugh at my naivety, but if I uninstall the drivers for my current video card to fit a new card and then restart my computer, what will drive the new card so that I can see the display to download and install the drivers. I am assuming that it will operate at a limited capacity until I install the drivers but I'd just like some reassurance of that before I proceed.

Basic drivers are supplied by the OS, just enough to see what's going on. Don't forget to change your settings in the BIOS to point to the new card.

It should be alright. If Windows does not support it out of the box, it will still work, just at reduced performance and likely reduced resolution until you install the new driver.
