Being practical, marble, polished or not isn t a good flooring for a kitchen. It needs sealing, special cleaning and maintenance and a lot of careful upkeep.

Stones like travertine are a bit better and they too need occasional sealing but are a bit easier.

Granites are even easier to maintain, but with all the porcelains a nd ceramic looks out there, that would be my 1st choice other than marble.Marble is beautiful but not practical in a kitchen.

Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL

As others have noted polished travertine is not the best choice for a kitchen for a couple reasons:

First, just to clarify travertine, marble and limestone are all essentially the same type of stone. They are all calcite-based stones, so when talking about travertine you can say the same thing about marble or limestone. There are no significant differences that would make you choose marble over travertine regarding maintenance or performance.

Polished travertine (marble, limestone) will show foot traffic wear in time and will require far more maintenance (think expensive professional repolishing) than a honed floor. Polished travertine will readily show dirt and dust, smears, scuffs, etc. so it takes near daily cleaning to keep looking good.

Stains are not an issue. Travertine and marble are actually pretty dense and do not stain easy. And polished travertine is virtually stain-proof in most instances.

However, travertine will "etch" easily (in seconds) upon contact with acidic substances of which there are many in the kitchen. People confuse etching with staining and think marble/travertine stains easy... but that's a myth.

These stones etch easily and that is the main reason they are problematic in the kitchen. Simply impossible to avoid acids (coffee, soda, juice, mustard, spaghetti sauce, etc.) in the kitchen.

Etching is very noticeable on a polished travertine because it causes dull and light-colored spots. Not as noticeable on a honed surface, but still occurs. (For more on etching, staining, etc. see first link below)

So, even though it is difficult to avoid acids in the kitchen, typically a kitchen floor is not exposed as much as a kitchen countertop. Marble/travertine as a kitchen countertop is a maintenance hassle. A travertine floor not nearly as much (unless you have it polished).

I'd suggest hone travertine. Etching is easily and cheaply repaired on a honed travertine floor (see second link below).

But as mentioned a ceramic, porcelain or best... granite floor will have easier maintenance.

You'll be sorry. Polished granite is very slippery, wet or dry if you are not wearing shoes or slippers. Why not look at honed granite? Not shiny but beautiful. Also, honed verde marble is fabulous. It comes in 8 or 12 inch square and with cream grout it would look too gorgeous. Also, do you have children? If yes, they will fall down. And older relatives? Same. Don't do it.

  • If you have the money to spend, I would strongly suggest granite flooring in the kitchen.Heavy traffic will not wear off the shine.

The second choice would be marble and third is travertine.

Practicality wise, it's easier to mop and it adds value to the house in the long run.

You may spend a bit more but its money worth spent.

=== use of travertine or man made marble is an excellent kitchen floring ... just use clear water damp mop to clean .... minimal care and looks good for years... real marble is great for a table top, but not the kitchen floor ...... ManM- marble is a good product for this application............
