Are University rankings more anecdotal than concrete?

We all read the US News and World Report rankings every year.

Are the "perceptions" of schools more of a branding phenomena?

All rankings are flawed, because there is no universally accepted criteria for ranking. The Forbes ranking, looks significantly different from the USN&WR.

One new rating that should be consulted is by the ACTA Education Foundation. This rating judges colleges by how much the college requires that its students take courses in seven categories. This rating leads to counter-intuitive scores. Some Elite colleges rate an "F" because they have no core subjects — education there is by cafeteria selection, and is therefore heavily dependent on the student making "right" choices (many don't...). Some regional state colleges rate an "A" because they require students to take at least six of seven categories of courses.

    The ACTA categories are:

    Composition

    Literature

    Foreign Language

    U.S. Government or History

    Economics

    Mathematics

    Natural or Physical Sciences

These are the categories said to define a good comprehensive university education, (without which a student merely gets an inadequate "Sarah Palin" education).
