Lots of people have bought Kindles -- so many that it's the all-time best selling item on Amazon. It's also the best selling ereader of all anywhere ever. And Amazon recently announced that it now sells more ebooks that physical books.
Kindles are very good -- outstanding for long-run reading. With library lending coming later this year to all Kindles via a firmware update, the last major missing feature will be in place.
Only if you want your ereader to do well with web browsing and apps and games would you be disappointed. The color-LCD-based ereaders such as the iPad or Nook Color do better with non-reading applications, but reading from them is like reading from a computer monitor; reading from a Kindle is like reading from a paper-based book.

Overall, I have to give the Kindle, Wi-Fi, Graphite, 6" Display with New E Ink Pearl Technology a 5 star rating because it does what it was designed to do very well, and in my opinion better than any of the competition. While the new features and capabilities aren't game-changing and truly outstanding, it is smaller, more capable, and better than any other e-reader out there. If you want `one device to handle it all', this isn't the place to look, but If you want a fantastic device solely for reading books, this is what you want.

No, get an iPad, you can get the Kindle app, and iBooks...so you get all the books that are on Kindle plus the ones that are on google books, and iBook store, and NewsStand is coming out soon for the iPad, so you can get magazines like People and US and things like that...Lol

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle. I have the one that is 189 dollars. They do have a lot of free books, and most of the books are cheaper than hardback/paperback.
