What are the chances of getting pregnant while breast feeding?

My husband and I have a 12 week old son and he is exclusively breast fed.

I still have not had my period come back yet since he was born and I have heard that breast feeding postpones your ovulation.

My doctor said that I can not go on the pill until I am done breast feeding my baby - which I plan to breast feed until he is 1 year old.

Right now we are just using the pull out method - we are not "trying" for another baby yet ..we want to wait a year or two. However I am just wondering if its true that breast feeding helps to prevent pregnancy.

Anyone else use the pull out method while breast feeding and find it effective?

We absolutely want more children - but my husband and I would like to enjoy the time with our son first before we rush more children.

If you are exclusively breastfeeding on demand (no bottles, no solids, no pacifiers) and you haven't had a period yet, then your chances of getting pregnant in the first 6 months are very small -- less than 2%. More info here... http://www.kellymom.com/bf/normal/fertility.html

I personally got my period at 6 months post-partum with baby #1 and got pregnant again when she was 8 months old. She did get several bottles of formula in the hospital (b/c I was struggling with breastfeeding), she took a pacifier occasionally up until 3-4 months, and she started solids at 4 months.

Babies #2 and #3 got no formula and nursed more frequently throughout the day and night. They also did not take pacifiers and didn't start solids until 5-6 months. And even when they did start solids, they were very small amounts. I got my period back at 11 months after baby #2 and 12 months after #3.

All that being said, if you really don't want to be pregnant, you'd be better off using a condom or some other form of birth control.

It does delay the first period after birth but it is a myth that you can not get pregnant while breastfeeding.

My mother and my best friend both have children 10 months apart and neither of them had a period before getting pregnant.

It’s common sense: the healthier you are, the more likely you are to get pregnant. Try to do whatever you can to improve your chances of getting pregnant. Learn here https://tr.im/dIYEd

If you are overweight, try to lose some and get to a healthier weight. Eat a healthy, well balanced diet, and exercise as often as possible. Don’t smoke, don’t drink, and of course, don’t do drugs. Try to avoid stressful situations, and keep things as calm as possible. Do whatever you can to keep everything as cool as possible. This will give you the best chance to get pregnant.

I know many people who have gotten pregnant using the pull out method bc of pre ejaculation that you can't see it. Use a condom or maybe you could get an IUD. There's alot of other types of birth control ask your dr.

Breast feeding is not a reliable source of protection at all!!!! Neither is pulling out because some sperm and semen are still released before he even cums!!!! Use condoms, and foam if you can do hormonal protection!!!

Actually pretty good. Your baby making machine has been switched on. A family friend had a baby and 4 weeks later was pregnant again.
