Basal body temperature a definite sign of ovulation?

For the past month or so, I have been charting my basal body temperature in order to get to know a little more about my cycles. Is a spike in basal body temperature and a sustained rise until time of menstruation a definite sign of ovulation, or is it possible that it could happen even in an anovulatory cycle? My BBT was actually only "down" for a few days last month, and didn't drop until a week or so after my menstruation.

Update:

My temperature does spike and stay high; however, it actually stays high for about a week after bleeding has stopped - this past cycle, the first cycle where I charted, I only had about 5 days of "low" temperatures (although FF and Countdown to Pregnancy gave me coverlines of 97.8 and 98.0, respectively). With those coverlines, I had a few extra days of "low" temps, but there was no definite drop at the time of menstruation.

If your temp spikes and stays high until your period then yes you ovulated. The temp rises and stays high until your period due to the presence of progesterone (heat inducing hormone) which is only released after ovulation. Annovulatory cycle will not have clear temp spike it will be all over the place... I hope this help and you are more than welcome to look at my chart (http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/295781)

You can calculate when you're ovulating. Take the number of days in your cycle (first day of period to the next first day of period) and divide in half. That's when you should ovulate. However, sperm can last up to 7 days so for several days before ovulation you can baby dance. For example, if your cycle is 28 days and your last period started March 1, you'll ovulate approx. the 14th so you'll want to be trying from the 7th through the 15th or so. Good luck!

it might take a few months to get a real good look at when you ovulate. But i don't think that your temp goes up if you don't ovulate. I joined fertilityfriend.com when i was ttc and used their chart to chart by bbt, i found it to be very helpful.
