How does diet affect hair?

My hair has been in better condition since I started eating 2x eggs daily and taking supplements because my hairdresser said a diet rich in protein improves condition of hair. It appears she is right, but how is this possible because it is my understanding that the hair is dead...? How can my diet improve my hair if it is dead? Is it just a coincidence?

Update:

What I mean is HOW do the nutrients get into the ends and midlengths of my hair.

You starve your body of the nutrients your body needs it eats away at other things to get the healthy stuffs it needs to survive. Much like your skin...
