Honda Civic Rear Caliper Wind Back? Help?
Tried to change my rear brake pads today and couldnt manage to get the piston back in the caliper. (2001 Civic).
On the end of the piston its like a cross shape, just wondering if my caliper is done for or if i need a tool to wind in the piston? If so is there anything I can improvise with to get it of such as a file?

Thanks for the info. concerning the cross-slots on the rear caliper pistons. You need a special inexpensive black hardened tool from NAPA or Carquest for your specific car. It will fit the slots on the piston then can be turned clockwise with a 3/8 ratchet and short extension till it bottoms out inside the brake caliper.

You can use long nosed pliers, but you need to be very careful, slip & you could tear the seal which will cost you a new caliper. Either way, the piston needs to be turned at the same time be pushed back. Be aware that some pistons that do use the wind back tools aren't always the same thread direction, so some calipers require you to turn the piston in the tightening direction to get it to wind in. When you do it, if you use the tool & find it's jamming up, then chances are the piston will need to be would in the opposite direction. There's a left hand & right handed tool for this.

Yes you need the wind back tool, and also you need to back off the h/brake cable and set up the pad/disc gap,and I'll be brutally honest here,I pay my rent and then some repairing damage done to rear caliper systems by,again, honest, incompetant owners and ever mechanics.
You get this wrong and wave goodbye to both calipers and possibly disks.
It's not the biggest job,I charge minimum hour or less if I'm not pushed.
save yourself some money and get a garage to do it,you get it wrong and it's over £300,big risk to save £20-40.

You need the tool, but most auto parts stores rent them to you FOR FREE, you just need to put up a $80 deposit as security that you'll bring it back, and they give you the money back.
It looks like a pulley puller but has the part that fits in the groove and turns the caliper piston while pushing it in.
Good luck!

You can use pliers and spread them into the slots and turn clock was while pushing in. Or go to a parts store a rent tie rear caliper tool.

ANY parts store sells the tool for around 10 bucks.......or u can use their loan-a-tool program...still runs about 10 bucks just u get money back when done...
u can use other things ..... but honestly in most cases less time and effort to go buy/rent the tool.....

Jack the motor vehicle up and attempt with the foot brake, if it nonetheless strikes then you definately probably have a siezed brake piston. this might must be stripped wiped sparkling and the seals replaced. in case you dcide to do the seals it wouldbe terrific in case you probably did the different area on the comparable time so which you have even braking. I advise you get this executed via a qualified mechanic in case you cant do it your self

Yea you have to screw it back in, has to do with the parking brake adjuster, the tool is cheap but if you can find a way to screw it back in more power to you,
