Why Is our friend CO2 under attack as the bad guy?

CO2 has been around since the formation of earth, helped life grow every step of the way, is essential to vegetation which covers about 70 percent of land, and is colorless, odorless, and tasteless?

but somehow we now have an image of CO2 as being

harmful

toxic

dirty

black and oddly enough...

unnatural

?? someone with an understanding greater than mine, please explain this.

Update:

and im not talking about just what we produce, but what the earth produces naturally.

Update 2:

lovely argumentation, but everything stated before is valid.

everything is harmful at the right concentrations, true, but when we are only changing the concentrations within a few percents, thats the difference. is that harmful? and science shows that on a scale of earths existance, CO2 is at its lowest point ever. just depends on the perspective right?

Because of the Global warming alarmists who insist that a couple of degrees of warming will wreak havoc on ecosystems and agriculture around the world. Historically in a warmer world, plant life has flourished in higher than present co2 concentrations than what we have now.

To be honest it sounds like you have been getting your information from denier blogs, Co2 is a colour-less odorless gas so how anyone can get (dirty or black) from that is beyond me.

It is part of all of us we are carbon based life.

The thing is life is an evolving process little life around today could survive in that early atmosphere it had no oxygen, some of the first life thrived in that atmosphere anoxic bacteria, as a by product they produced oxygen, which built up in the atmosphere, but oxygen was toxic to them and eventually it caused one of the first mass extinctions. (the first time life changed the atmosphere)

I have seen some comments about toxic effect of Co2 etc, most of these seem to be deniers playing the troll, the amounts that atmospheric levels have to grow to before we have an issue is very high over 5000ppm (currently it's 392ppm) the issue (if you look at the science) is the atmospheric warming effect has on melting ice and raising sea level and what warmer weather will do to the worlds weather systems. Please note not one mention of (harmful, toxic, dirty, black or unnatural)

Yes the EPA did try to get it declared a pollutant but as a control measure not because it was toxic, pollution has many meanings not just toxic.

"science shows that on a scale of earths existence, CO2 is at its lowest point ever. just depends on the perspective right"

Actually no it's not, at least two points in Earth history it dropped lower (and the planet froze)

Deniers are always keen to point out past high Co2 levels and say inane things like look it was a tropic paradise, this is the sort of nonsense those like Lord Mockingtone peddle to their followers, it ignores several major points, through most of the periods mentioned sea level was much higher than it is today and there where was no ice at the poles, even in the recent past (15,000 years ago) humans were fairly nomadic and sea level change was not much of an inconvenience, we just moved, today we have major cities and infrastructure that have been centuries in their building, they are in most cases integral parts of our economic structure. Many of these would suffer major problems with rises as small as 1m which we look highly likely to see by the end of this century.

Deniers try to say either this wont happen or that 1m isn't really that big a problem, the first statement is pretty obvious B/S the second ignores the fact the end of the century is not some sort of full stop, left unchecked sea level will continue to rise and as the planet gets warmer the rate of that rise will increase.

Lummerman: You may want to do some reading on the subject, Co2 has no effect at all on ozone.

    Ozone was affected by CFC's.

CO2 is a great guy, plants need it to live, and we need it so that the Earth is not just a frozen snowball. It would become that in a matter of years without CO2. However, we are INCREASING the amount of CO2 in a major way, which will have the effect of increasing the mean temperature of the Earth and changing weather patterns. Although plants need it to grow, water is a much more limiting factor, and increasing the amount of CO2 will change rainfall patterns on Earth, increasing rainfall in some areas (probably where it's not needed, like the tropics), while decreasing rainfall in some of the most fertile areas of the subtropics and mid-latitudes. If humans did not have a civilization, that might be fine, but we do, with a HUGE infrastructure designed for climate the way it is. If you start messing with that it will cost of trillions of real dollars to re-engineer our society and it may lead to millions of deaths through famine, etc. It may eventually lead to sea level rise, inundating large areas of land, which again would not be that big a deal except much of our civilization is built very close to sea level.

It doesn't really matter if things thrived on the Earth millions of years ago with much higher CO2, we're talking about our civilization RIGHT NOW. Increasing CO2 will cause problems, big problems.

There are many kinds of naturally occurring substances that are toxic to us. It is essential to different types of living organisms however it's effect in the atmosphere and as a greenhouse gas you are ignoring. Natural variation is alright as it would happen even if we weren't here. Too much anthropogenic input into that natural variation has the effect of throwing off those natural cycles related to temperature change and CO2 concentration. That is what is occurring now. Animals and society are adapted to the current level of temperature and CO2 concentration. If you change the temperature natural feedbacks start occurring. Those feedbacks affect the organisms and how they live. If organisms live in certain ecological niches they may perish. Otherwise there will be lifestyle changes. as change occurs it forces certain other changes.

Arsenic, hydrochloric acid, chlorine gas and many others have also been around since the formation of the earth and are billed as toxic and harmful.

    So that argument is invalid.

Water is also colorless, odorless and tasteless and yet can yield death and massive destruction in the appropriate concentration.

So that argument is invalid as well.

Humans are capable of mining compounds and elements from within the earth, from places where there were sequestered and not a part of the normal planetary cycles. We then change their composition and pump gigatons of them into the atmosphere.

How can you complacently assume that will have no affect on our surroundings and the climate?

a million. Iraq! 2. sturdy and evil. precise and incorrect... those at the instant are not effective, nor lifelike procedures of viewing the international. Wars are terrible issues pushed my distinctive historic, political and financial motives. For any conflict interior the history of humankind, there'll constantly be human beings on the two factors of the fence asserting the different area develop into undesirable. As for why "we" are the undesirable adult males... a lost of "us" (such as you) do no longer think of "we" are. yet a large variety of "others" in all danger think of so through fact the "English talking international" is responsible for some enormously terrible issues - merely like all human beings else. motives why human beings usually get extremely obsessed with how evil the English talking international is, is by using the fact many interior the English talking international think of they have never achieved something incorrect (you're a working occasion). the reason you do no longer understand of the atrocities devoted by using one among those large variety of English talking worldwide places is by using the fact it truly is greater handy to work out ones "area" as being the sturdy adult males. England has achieved terrible issues (generally in Africa and India throughout their colonising years), on an identical time as usa has over the final 50 years been doing terrible issues international huge - yet in a manner that makes pointing the parent harder. i inspire you seem deeper into this necessary question. sturdy luck.

"Somehow" you have been picking up oil company originated lies about science, to recycle them here, instead of doing your schoolwork and learning to write in English. Global warming is real, serious, and caused by the CO2 from fossil fuels, according to tens of thousands of scientists from around the world who have studied it for over a century.

U.S. National Academy of Sciences, 2010:

    http://books.nap.edu/openbook.php?record_id=12782&...

“Climate change is occurring, is caused largely by human activities, and poses significant risks for a broad range of human and natural systems.”

    http://nationalacademies.org/morenews/20100716.htm...

“Choices made now about carbon dioxide emissions reductions will affect climate change impacts experienced not just over the next few decades but also in coming centuries and millennia…Because CO2 in the atmosphere is long lived, it can effectively lock the Earth and future generations into a range of impacts, some of which could become very severe.”

    http://www.nasonline.org/site/PageServer?pagename=...

“The Academy membership is composed of approximately 2,100 members and 380 foreign associates, of whom nearly 200 have won Nobel Prizes. Members and foreign associates of the Academy are elected in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research; election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors that can be accorded a scientist or engineer.”

CO2 is damaging our ozone layer, which therefore causes more sun to enter the Earth's atmosphere, which causes temperature rise. This then will melt ice caps all over the world, which will raise sea levels and cause sea temperatures to rise. This will wipe out whole species of marine life as well as destroy human civalization located near the ocean.

We will also have more natural disasters such as tsunamis and hurricanes.
