new gun barrel won't get clean?

i just bought a mossberg 930 12 gauge shotgun. i'm a real newbie and have never owned a gun before, but i used hoppes solvent with cloth and then a wire brush and a soft brush extension and there is still some residue about 6 inches in from the breech side of the gun. is this normal? is it ok that that residue is in there or does it need to come out. i've used all the tools i have and it it still won't come out. i put some of the lube in there after fiinishing cleaning too.

Update:

so i went to the store today where i bought it. they said that these were the "gas ports" and are supposed to be there. they look like they are protruding to me, but they said they are actually indentations and are supposed to be there. can anybody confirm this? they are about 6 or eight 8 inches down from the breech side; the two holes/residue are right above the cylinder on the barrel where the gas piston assembly connect into. thanks again.

Try to run through a boresnake several times.

I use a Hoppes BoreSnake. It's the easiest way to get your shotgun's bore spotless. One pass through usually does it all, washable and reusable.

I put a good amount of BreakFree CLP on the BoreSnake's forward "skirt" and a little CLP on the tail, then pull it through. This cleans better than using the BoreSnake dry. Hoppers #9 would work fine for this too.

Uh oh. The shotgun barrel should be shiny all the way from one end to the other. If it's not, it may be corrosion instead of dirt. I would try to return the gun if you can. If you can't, put a drill on the end of your cleaning rod, use a bronze brush and see if you can use some high speed rotation to help you out. That's a bit of a last resort, but it beats scrubbing for eternity. It will get it as clean as it's going to get!

Wait is this a NEW gun?

And BTW dont worry about it too much. Its a shotgun. *Nobody say a word*

Just keep the action clean and the barrel from corrosion. Its not a precision rifle brother. Shot guns love dirty barrels. lol

There should be no residue. Return the weapon, specifying the problem. You should get your money back or receive a new replacement.
