Many Hondas, including your Civic, have timing belts. Change the belt between 60,000 and 90,000 miles. The 06+ Civics have timing chains.

If you're in the US, the Civic came is both the K20A 2.0 liter and 1.7 L engine. however, the Type S was sold only in the UK, so if you're not there, it is not a Type S. In the US, it was called the Si and it came with the K20 engine.. which has a timing chain. The 2002-2005 Civic Si was also the only hatchback Civic sold after 2000 model year in the U.S. If you have any other Civic from 2003 (and you're in the U.S.), you have a 1.7 L engine....which has a timing belt. Being that you stated miles and not kilometers, it's safe to say you're in the U.S. and yours is a U.S. Si model rebadged with a Type S logo. Timing chain is maintenance free and should last the life of the car. Many will argue with that but look at how many cars with timing chains that have been around for 30-40 years without ever needing replacement. Timing belts have to be replaced at 105,000 miles.

Hi Mike as it is a job that you personally should not do yourself it makes little difference so call in at a dealer and ask them they will tell you. If it is a belt then yes it needs doing probably about now. however if it is a chain it will wait a lot longer as chains do not wear as badly as a belt. consult with a honda dealer on the topic.

Honda recommends replacement of the timing belt at 105,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first.

pretty sure it has a timing belt. not sure what honda's replacement interval is, but most manufacturers recommend between 60,000-100,000 miles. i think they put timing chains in starting the 06 or 07 model year
