What do you think of this quote from John Adams?

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.[

I think it's sadly ironic that if you try this at home (at least the 'guns . . . illuminations (fireworks)' part) in most states in the union, you'll be ticketed or arrested. But it's a free country . . .

Alas, I fear that Adams might agree today with what libertarian Joseph Sobran wrote a few years ago:

"By today's standards, King George III was a very mild tyrant indeed. He taxed his American colonists at a rate of only pennies per annum. His actual impact on their personal lives was trivial. He had arbitrary power over them in law and in principle, but in fact it was seldom exercised. If you compare his rule with that of today's U.S. Government, you have to wonder why we celebrate our independence."

"alyssa" - The Declaration of Independence was finished on July 2, the first signatures were made on July 4. Most historians know that.

    He was two days off.

@wichitaor1: Yes, but he said Independence Day would be celebrated on July 2nd. Most people today know it isn't. Thus, he was two days off.
