When I heated with wood I split mine while fresh. It seemed to work better for me than letting it dry out first. The exception was blow-downs from hurricanes; they were left to dry until the weather cooled off; no one wants to swing an axe in 95 degree temperatures.

    Good luck and enjoy!

Let the wood dry. It will be much easier to split. I usually wait until I see natural cracks starting in the wood. Put the wedge or maul into these cracks and often you can split the wood in one or two whacks. Trying to split green wood is like trying to push honey up hill.
