What food and meals do they usually have in the army (or not have)?

I am asking because my friend is coming home from a deployment in Afghanistan and without asking him (because he doesn't always like to talk about it) I want to know what meals he would like me to cook (like meals he would miss because they don't have them) or meals that they have a lot of (so I would rather not cook those so he is not sick of them). Any advice would be helpful! Thanks!

I just asked my husband what he got. He said grits, eggs, potatoes, SOS, and anything bland. He said a steak would have been awesome, along with seafood. And with the old C-rats there was no ethnic cuisine like Mexican and Italian. So basically anything very flavorful. He even said rice casseroles would be nice, anything like 'mom' used to make.

Anything fresh and home made - BBQ would be good. Military meals are about keeping fed and not flavor although they aren't all bad. Some divisions have very good cooks on staff, others have to work with what is given them and sometimes that's not much.

Ask him or some family members what his favorite foods are.

He may not talk about his duty because of his clearance and position. He can't.

Secretke, I think your friend would appreciate a nice home cooked Sunday diner type of meal. When you hear interviews sometimes with the deployed troops, questions like this have come up, and the typical, answer from some of them has been what I have suggested.

They are grateful that they are home in one piece.
