There was a prophecy that the one to defeat Voldemort was someone born near the end of July.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives ... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies ..."
There were two possibilities, Harry or Neville Longbottom. Eventually Voldemort went for Harry because he chose the halfblood, like himself, as more of a threat. He went to Harry's house because he wanted to kill Harry so the prophecy wouldn't come true. Harry's parents defended Harry and Voldemort killed them.

Because there was the prophecy, which I can't really remember but it said something about a boy being born at the end of July (Harry, or Neville) who would defeat Voldemort. So Voldemort went in and killed the parents and tried to kill Harry in an attempt to stop the prophecy from coming true.

I'd read the books if I were you, it goes into more details then I could ever explain. It had something to do with a prophecy though, and Voldemort thought it involved Harry. (Which it did) You could google it and find out, it's detailed.
Edit
Anybody else who says something different doesn't know what they are talking about.

Lily & James Potter, were individuals of the Order of the Phoenix a collection that rebels adverse to him, so of course for that reason. Voldemort did not quite have yet another excuse to kill James, yet he does no longer have cared. the only objective of coming to their residing house replaced into to kill Harry, because he believed him to be the "boy born on the real of July" interior the profecy. Snape had requested Voldemort to spare Lily, because he replaced into in stay with her. interior the real, Lily refused to face aside so Voldemort might want to kill Harry, so he killed her, so he might want to kill Harry whichbhe of course failed at. hopefully I cleared issues upna bit for you! :)

He was supposed to kill the longbottom's parents who were aurors but he accidentally entered potter's house. It is stated by dumbledore in harry potter and the order of the pheonix :)

Voldie killed Harry's parents because he was out to kill all of Dumbledore's army. The first DA was fighting against Voldemort's death eaters, and they were next in line.

Well he's evil. He probably wants to destroy any good wizard since he's a bad one.
