I talked with an Air Force recruiter and was told I can join in the new fiscal year 2012 even though I have...?

...prior service. I have did all my initial paperwork. I will pick my job in October. Does anyone have any useful tips, occupation suggestions, or post assignment recommendations? Serious comments only please and hold the sarcasm.

    Hi Landra,

Since you didn't give any information on your past qualifications or current interests, it is somewhat difficult to give you any recommendations. Keep in mind, a recruiter's main objective is to fill any shortages in specific occupational skills. These are usually skills that have a high turnover rate or the ones that nobody cares for. How was your previous ASVAB score? What rank are you being offered to joined the Air Force as prior service?

Don't be surprised if you don't get a lot of options to pick a career field/speciality skill that you really want. Once you get out and decide to come back in, recruiters are required to fill the positions that are critically short. Hopefully, one of these positions are something that you may be interested in.

I always recommend getting a skill that will allow you to use it after you decide to leave the military service. It is always nice to have some computer training, manage assets and people, and most importantly, have good leadership skills. You can never wrong in having these invaluable skills once you've decide to get out.

    Regards,

RCF (Master Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps Retired)

I am in the same predicament. I started all my paper work with my recruiter last week but there might be one obstacle, which is a tattoo on my right forearm. my recruiter told me that since I have been persistent that he would help persuade those in charge to sweep the tattoo under the rug but since he mentioned it i am nervous as all hell about it. I really want to return to active duty and cant wait until october. hopefully they are not as strict with their tattoo policy for prior service enlistees as they are with new recruits. i've had the tattoo since tech school, its not new

Based on the list from last year FY 2011, 250 slots were open for prior service, which i found out has been very high compared to recent years.

Most of those jobs went to recruiting (30), contracting (30), and security forces combat arms (25). the rest of the slots was given to pararescue, combat control, EOD, and unmanned aerial sensor operator.

In the same exact boat, enlisting with the Air Force into CCT, out of 6 years in the Marines. They required me to have previous BRT and SST though to be able to get a shot at the job I want. (CCT). But generally the recruiters know what they are talking about, if he/she is saying you can, you should be able to.

Obviously ASVAB scores, previous training, any prior college, commendations, ect, will help you in your enlistment process.

Remember, that recruiter is nothing more than a Car Salesman, I wouldn't trust anyone of them till you check it all yourself.

Personally, I would go Navy first, Air Force would be my last choice.
