the only bad advice on this page is "early childhood" -do not do this! That coursework does not lead to an elementary school teacher - rather it leads to preschool. (preK teachers in my area make 1/5 of what a kinder teacher makes)
the other posters are correct. You want any liberal arts bachelors - then you would apply to the graduate school of education for your credentialing work. Your school has an entire department you should visit - they have advisors who could help you plan out a series.

Unlike other states where you can major in elementary education, you cannot do that in California. Education is a graduate subject. Major in an academic subject and as a grad student you take education classes and student teach. It takes 5 years to get a credential in California. I know someone else at CSUN doing the same thing.

elementary education generally certifies you to teach grades 1-6. early childhood education certifies pre k to 2. generally. the exact grades may differ slightly, but check with your adviser. but i would go with elementary ed. there are also probably state tests that you will need to take. some schools work this into the major's curriculum and will have you completely certified by the time you graduate, however, others will not and you will have to prepare for the tests on your own time.

Your best bet if you wish to be an Elementary teacher in California is to major in Liberal Arts, then after you get your BA, take the CBEST and go for the extra year for the ed credential.
