It's going to depend on the condition, and where it was minted.
To figure out the mint, look under the date for a mintmark. A "D" means it was minted in Denver, an "S" is for San Francisco, and coins minted in Philadelphia have no mint mark.
Now for the condition--is the coin worn to the point that the portrait is basically an outline with just a few of the major details still visible? If it's from Philadelphia, it will bring you about $.10, while a Denver or San Fran example might bring close to a dollar.
If all the major details are there, and some of the minor ones, figure about $.15 for a Philly, and $1.25 for Denver and San Francisco.
If there is only a little wear on the high points of the coin, then it will probably bring about $.80 for one from Philadelphia, $3-$4 for a Denver, and around $7 for one from San Francisco.
And it's just not true that if you have just one coin, you won't be able to sell it. You'll be able to sell it at your nearest coin dealer without any problems.

In theory it's worth at least some modest amount as a collectible, but as a practical matter if you only have one single old penny to sell, you won't find any practical way to sell it, unless to a friend.
