    akira is one of the best graphic stories i've read so far.

    I'd go with either Lynd Ward's Novel In Woodcuts Madman's Drum, which influenced a lot of the guys who first did graphic novels, or Dan O'Neill's Hear the Sound of My Feet Walking Drown the Sound of my Voice Talking which dates backs to the sixties.
