Is it true that the name "HollyWood" itself has some type of pagan significance?
I have heard this, but can't remember the explanation behind it. Anyone know about this?
I know the W isn't capitalized. I just did that to denote the significance of those two words together, for those who might be a little slow and not recognize that on their own.

No, it is not true. The town was named by a Mr. H. J. Whitley, who planned to establish a ranch there (long before actors arrived on the scene, when it was a sleepy little town full of orange groves). Mr Whitley was a conservative, christian type who hoped to create a town for people like himself. There was a nearby neighborhood named Holly Canyon, and apparently Mr. Whitley's wife got the name "Hollywood" from a friend who lived there. (An alternate story is that the wife was on a train, when she met a woman whose home was named "Hollywood.) In any event, his wife suggested the name to Mr. Whitley, and he liked it. So that's what he named the town.
Years later, actors and movie-makers came to Hollywood, fleeing the patent lawyers of Thomas Edison, and looking for good weather. At the time, actors were generally considered to be immoral people by conservatives, and signs went up in shop windows saying "No actors or dogs allowed." But as we all know, movie-making caught on anyway, and the rest is history.

Holly was a sacred plant to Northern European pagans. However, it's rather much lost that connotation nowadays (look how often we use it in Christmas decorations). Perhaps the town is so named because there was a lot of holly growing there?
I wouldn't suspect anything insidious.

The general story is that it was named after someone's ranch of the same name.
I highly doubt there was any pagan significance to it.

Patton Oswalt told me the town was named after a girl named Holly who was hit in the head with a piece of wood and raped.
I'm not certain of the accuracy of such claims.
