How can i inexpensively remove rust off bike before i donate it?

Back in like 2005 or 2006 My son as a gift got a brand new Schwinn Manta Ray

http://www.genesbmx.com/schwinn/mantaray1.jpg

The same one in the photo .Well in that period he used it maybe 3 or possibly 4 times. He was a tall child so on top of the look of a cross between a low rider & a muscle bike it boasts a super-cool frame that's brimming with attitude. The double-wide polo frame and extra-long Schwinn chrome springer fork give the bike a laid-back feel, especially when combined with the casual banana saddle and chrome sissy bar (otherwise known as a passenger backrest). The double-wide coaster brakes, meanwhile, help riders stop safely in any situation. Other details include a steel chain guard for safety, wide front and rear fenders extra Fat wheels. But I had the neck of the seat the( pole) customized for extra length. Here is the problem The Rust I have WD-40 To get it all aligned into tip top shape. But how to i get rid of the rust?its not rotted out

rust no whole or decay. Its from the elements of the weather.Cosmetic rust. The chain is great wheels great .The grips on the handle bars wil be the only thing that some person has to replace.I still have the original owner manual and registration card i never filled out.Once

i can get the rust off .I am going to post it on freecycle.org there are so many in need so any suggestion i sure would be grateful.Thank You Gsmom.

sounds like you have a brand new bike with a little bit of rust on it, the chains not even rusted? thats the only part bikers care about. ur giving it away for free why worry? im sure they will be extremely happy to get that bike..i know i would.

    this might help

First you'll need some steel wool, I used a fine one for this job since the rust was not that bad. No need to scratch the metal too hard for nothing.

Second you'll need some metal polish to lubricate, and polish while you rub with the steel wool. Liquid polish works better for me.

Lastly, you'll need a clean rag to buff out everything after you've removed the rust. Mine is pretty dirty, but works great.

Rub the metal-polish-loaded steel wool on the part until you see the brown rust pits vanish. Don't do a circular motion, go in a back-and-forth motion instead to match the length of the part. Circular scratches will show even if they are very small.

Once you've made all the rusty spots go away, take your polishing rag, a clean cotton t-shirt can do the job, and buff the piece until you are happy with the result.

You can always finish with a regular application of metal polish without the steel wool after you're done.

I don't know if I would remove the rust with anything more than wiping it down with WD-40. It won't take all the rust off, but it will remove that rust-colored sheen and prevent it from spreading. Someone will probably have to restore the bike properly, which would include sanding, painting, rechroming, and replacement of smaller parts.

i get rust off things like my saw tools etc by sandpapering them then i use a solid cake abrasive for cleaning pots. i get "astonish" but yo u will have alocal brand. it is great a little on a scrubby cloth and i rub that in till i can rub no more and then i wipe off the abrasive stuff..and i put the oil on then... you have to make sure you get it all off too cos if you leave a little it can keep bubbbling away underneath where you cant see nad pop up again later. the oil seals it so the air cant get at it ones the structure of the rust has been removed. astonish is great on pots and pans too!! plug plug but i see your not adverse to that yourself!!! good luck
