Why don't many black people use air conditioning?
I'm not talking about an 80 or 90 degree day when it's not that bad if you're on the highway. But I'm talking about 100 degree days where it's just plain hot and nasty outside. On days like that practically everyone that has a car with working A/C has the windows up and the A/C cranked on. But then you see many black people sweating their b u tts off with the air turned off. I'm not talking hoopty cars either. I see this in Cadillacs, Lexus, Lincolns, etc. is it to save on gas, or what? I'd gladly give up a mile or two per gallon for personal comfort on a hot day.
Note that I said many, not all. So tuck away the race card....I'm not trying to bait people for africa jungle heat jokes and what not either.
I think you're right about the cheap part. A lot of folks living in apartment buildings or low income housing but still spending a huge chunk of their income on luxury cars to give off the illusion that they are rich just don't have the same priorities as others who save toward retirement, kids college, etc. Some may have to be cheap on the gas to pay the rest of their bills.

The function of sweat is to keep your skin cool naturally.. so I guess the people you saw sitting in cars sweating were actually pretty comfortable without the air conditioning on.

I work in a five with Japanese who wear parkas when the air is on 79 degrees. They come to America and hate air conditioning. But then again they are thin and frail. The few blacks wear low cut dresses and they appear to be cold. I think it depends on how you live at home, your body type and I believe how you were raised. I hate heat that's overwhelming. I like to be comfortable and believe germs migrate in heat with people sweating, coughing and sneezing.

i would not limit this question to only black people because ive seen all races do this especially white. I always figured its because they wanted to get a tan or something? never really put that much thought into it as you are regarding black people.. gee i wonder why? seriously whatever a black person does, it seems as if white people spend their days writing thesis essays and questions regarding "black people". You NEVER see blacks putting any second thought regarding whites.. just shows you how whites (whether they admit it or not) are racist. Regardless you question black people and what we do because you are looking for the NEGATIVE response to prove your presumptions on why black people do X thing.
Funny thing is most of the time its WHITE MALES who seem to be worrying so much about what black people do, why black men do this, why black women do that? all a while white women are dating every other race BUT YOU.
I think the biggest thing against white guys is the fact that to many of you are just down right ignorant. And make no effort to learn about other people's cultures, don't go out of your way to learn about other people's culture and thus you remain ignorant. Always going to be questioning WHY?
Black people are really not that complicating.. we really aren't. If you just took the time to get to know some ...
And to answer your question:
I honestly highly doubt its limited to the fact that they are saving money to pay their bills etc. With the high rates of car insurance, gas (regardless they have to pay for gas at some point, AC on or not) as well as car maitnence PLUS rent etc.. because if it was, than most likely they would not even be able to afford a car based on their annual income alone, car companies don't just let anyone get a car. You have to have proof that you can pay of the car loan, meaning you need a good job to do so as well as good credit. SO with that being said it most likely is not due to the fact that they spend ALL their money on the car.. its just not possible when you counter in the other expenses.. they would not be able to afford a car in the first place. Nice try though, the media would like you to believe that if a black person owns a nice car it comes down to the fact that all their money is spent on their car. SMH
I think the Pocahontas movie depicts white males VERY well. Listen to this song .. i think you can learn from it despite the fact that its a disney movie:

If their in a car they're probably trying to save gas or enjoying the air just like many do, but if you have ever been inside a non-poor black person's house you'll know why - you'll sweat to death in there most likely.

Your last sentence made me laugh. And to be honest, I haven't experienced what you're talking about. And I live in South Florida. So I guess it depends on your area.
Or you can blame it on the economy.

It depends, if it's a limited-access roadway where you're going 40+ mph then I will have my windows rolled down; the wind usually does more than the AC at that point.
If i'm driving around town then I have my AC on since there's no wind.

Personally when I am driving I prefer natural breeze over the air conditioner. if it is too humid outside and there is only hot breeze I will turn the air conditioner on.
